***FLIP OVER 
Week of October 19, 2015
What did we learn last week?
Math: Lastweek we learned that we can create and solve addition stories. We connected this to our everyday
lives and started to think about how we use math in the “real world”. The kids created their own stories both
verbally and through drawing and writing them out. Working on these orally is a great way to practice!
Word Study: We added on, this, for and said to our classroom Word Wall. We learned how to correctly make
two more “pull back” letters (s and f). The kids got their first individualized word sorts; we will keep these for
two weeks to practice hearing the sounds, noticing the spelling patterns and/or finding exceptions to the rules.
We continued to look at the “ing” ending and also started looking at some of the many s blends and digraphs.
Reader’s Workshop: Last week we talked a lot about vowels and the different sounds they make. We learned
that readers should try vowels “two ways” (long and short) and practiced decoding words with various vowel
sounds. Keep in mind that the English language is very irregular so telling your child a word that they couldn’t
possibly decode with sounds or meaning is perfectly OK! We are fine tuning our partner work and learning to
“coach, not tell” when our partner finds a tricky word. We are also learning how to expand our work together
through rich conversation. (OK, maybe rich is a stretch, but it’s a start!)
Writer’s Workshop: Our focus in writing was on looking to other authors to notice what they do and then
trying to do similar things. Students tried adding ellipses, pop out words and exact actions. We ended the week
by studying some of the books we are reading and noticing things like titles, chapters, glossaries, speech
bubbles and more. Our little authors are capable of big things!
Social Studies/Science: We watched a Brain Pop, Jr. video about the life cycle of the apple tree and made our
own apple life cycle. Hopefully your student showed you their completed project! We ended our unit by making
applesauce. A huge thank you to Mrs. Garofoli for coming in to do that with us! We talked more about our class
promise and focused on using kind words when we communicate for Social Studies.
Every child peeled and cored an apple for our delicious applesauce!
