Counseling Division January 22, 2015 – 9 am to 11 am NEA 187 Presiding: Joy Fisher, Chair of the Counseling Division Present: Elizabeth Colocho, Jassiel Dominguez, Andres Gonzalez, Bobby Henrichs, Christine Kourinian, Elliot Mason, Mica Murillo, Kaman Ng, Yvonne Pueblos, Dan Ruiz, Sue Steele, Angelica Villalpando, Keiyanna Chisom Guests: Juan Baez, Kate Campbell, Hovsep Kotelyan Meeting was called to order at 9:00 AM. . 1. Introduction Staff present introduced themselves. 2. International Student Office Updates – Christine and Keiyanna Christine announced that she is leaving for another job. In the absence of an International Student Counselor, students will be seen by Academic Counselors. Christine and Keiyanna gave an overview of what the counselors will be dealing with in counseling international students. 3. Humanities & Fine Arts Division Updates- Kate Campbell and Juan Baez Ms. Campbell announced that there are two new Communication Studies courses for Spring: COMM 122 “Communicating Across Cultures” and COMM 190 “Communication and New Media.” She passed a sample instruction for a COMM 121 essay assignment and emphasized English 101 as prerequisite. She also mentioned that they have a new Art and a new Piano instructors. Mr. Baez provided information on Spring 2015 Theater productions and recommended the following Theater courses: 270, 275 – to those who like to dabble in acting 200 – to help students develop public speaking through theater 300 – for set building 4. Committee Reports a) Kaman for Sara – January 31 is the deadline for Transfer Application to UC. b) Dan on Retention – Presented a flier on Spring Financial Aid Workshops with dates. He stated that the workshop can take the place of an appointment. He also showed the Winter and Spring Dismissal flier. On Harbor Advantage, he mentioned that the students have their classes already and that the goal for the High School recruitment project is 400 participants. c) Kaman – On EOPS advisory new policies: 1) 55 units completed before applying is considered over the application limit. This starts in Fall 2015. 2) For DSPS students: 6 units is required to be in EOPS and a note from DSPS. d) Elizabeth – Mentioned an online orientation software “COMEVO” by the Communication Evolved company. She will give an update on SSSP using this application in the next meeting. 5. Status of Walk-Ins Wednesdays Yvonne expressed her lack of clarity on the purpose of the walk-ins. She suggested SEP Wednesday instead of all-purpose Wednesday. Dan’s concern is with the schedule and having equal load among counselors. 6. Assessment Exemption Form Processing 7. Computer Information Systems Offerings- Hovsep Kotelyan Mr. Kotelyan asked about student data on CIS and recruiting students to CIS . He would like to increase enrollment in CIS courses and asked counseling for feedback. 8. New Petition for Credit Form There was a discussion on how to improve the form and form policy as well as on transferring college credit from foreign colleges to Harbor. 9. Chair’s Report Joy stated that there will be a project to collect data on Walk-Ins Wednesday.. She asked for ideas on catchphrases for counseling services and also for possible new days dedicated to certain services. She passed a sign-up sheet for refreshment volunteers for future meetings.
