Lab Study 15.1 A – Phyla of Gymnosperms
- observe specimens of the 4 gymnosperm phyla (Coniferophyta, Ginkgophyta, Cycadophyta,
Gnetophyta (no specimen); compare and differentiate between the phyla
Lab Study 15.1 B – Pine Life Cycle
- observe/differentiate between male and female cones; relate to life cycle, Fig. 15.2 (Fig. 16.1)
- fixed slides “pine staminate cone”, “pine ovulate cone”, and “pine mature pollen”; relate to life cycle
Lab Study 15.2 A – Flower Morphology
- observe the different varieties of flowers; identify the various structures of a flower using the
specimens and models; complete Table 15.3 (Table 16.3) for at least 3 different flowers
Lab Study 15.2 B – Pollinators
- using “Key to Pollination” p. 412 (p. 422), determine the pollinators of the various flowers provided
Lab Study 15.2 C – Angiosperm Life Cycle
- learn the angiosperm life cycle; relate structures of flowers to life cycle, as in Fig. 15.5 (Fig. 16.3)
- fixed slides “lily anther mature pollen” and Lilium ovary; relate to life cycle
Lab Study 15.2 D – Fruits and Dispersal
- using the “Key to Fruits” p. 418 (p. 428) and the provided posters of fruits, learn the various types of
fruits
