BSC 2011L Lab Outline Introduction to Tissues Use pp. 585-589 (pp. 574-578 7th ed.) to help you identify the different types of tissues on the slides The following slides may be used to find and identify each tissue type. Epithelial Tissue - simple squamous – “Lung Human” - simple cuboidal – “kidney”; “human scalp” - simple columnar – “jejunum” - stratified squamous – “human scalp” Connective Tissue - loose fibrous connective – “areolar tissue” - adipose – “adipose tissue”; “human scalp” - bone – “bone” - cartilage – “hyaline cartilage” - blood – “blood” (see Exercise 23.5 8th edition); ID erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets Muscle Tissue - skeletal – “skeletal muscle” - cardiac – “cardiac or heart muscle” - smooth – “smooth muscle”; “jejunum” Nervous Tissue - neuron – “spinal cord”; look for neurons within magnified spinal cord Ex. 22.1 – Histology of the Skin - fixed slide of skin section Ex. 22.2 – Intro to the Fetal Pig - external anatomy; know male and female Ex. 22.3 – Digestive System - all labeled anatomy are fair game in this section; you may omit the cross-section through jejuno-ilium p. 601 (p. 591 7th ed.) Ex. 23.1 and 23.2 - Glands and Respiratory Structures and the Heart/Pulmonary Blood Circuit - all labeled anatomy are fair game in this section - use models to help you better identify the vessels and chambers of the heart - be sure to know path of blood through the heart and its vessels within the 2 circuits Ex. 23.3 – The Heart/Systemic Circuit in the Thorax - use pig and models - veins = venae cavae, branchiocephalic, jugulars, subclavian - arteries = aortic arch, branchiocephalic, subclavians, carotids Ex. 23.4 – The Systemic Circuit in the Abdominal Cavity - renal arteries/veins - caudal vena cava - aorta - iliac artery/vein - femoral artery/vein - mesenteric arteries/veins Ex. 23.5 – Blood - see above under Introduction to Tissues Ex. 23.6 – Fetal Pig Circulation - know how blood flows differently in fetus - ductus venosus, ductus arteriosus, foramen ovale Ex. 23.7 – Respiratory System - all labeled anatomy fair game - use models and text to ID structures Ex. 24.1 – Excretory System - section of kidney, know renal cortex, renal medulla, renal pyramid, renal pelvis, ureter Ex. 24.2 – Reproductive System - all anatomy fair game for both male and female Ex. 24.3 – Nervous Tissue and the Eye A. – structure of neuron (slide) C. - Eye *** Be sure to complete all questions and tables within the results and discussion sections pertaining to each exercise completed above. Yes, you need to draw the microscope slides, but you do not have to draw the pig dissection.
