Required Textbook and Materials Basic Reading Power (2nd edition), Beatrice S. Mikeulecky & Linda Jeffries, Longman. A First Look at the U.S.A., Milada Broukal, Longman. A bilingual dictionary OR Longman Basic Dictionary, Pearson (recommended) loose leaf paper and a folder to keep your notes, exercises, and assignments pen, pencil, eraser, highlighter Course Objectives Students will: comprehend familiar words and/or phrases related to academic settings (e.g. signs, directions, forms, and schedules) understand simple sentences that are clearly related/sequenced when context, background knowledge, and /or visual information support meaning use a bilingual or basic dictionary to search for word meaning Course Work In this course, students read fluently in silence and out loud. They read in the classroom and at home. Students scan different types of texts for important information (menus, schedules, etc.). They learn common vocabulary, identify parts of the word (suffixes), and use a dictionary. Students work actively in pairs or groups and exchange information about the reading passage. Attendance and Punctuality Come to class on time and attend classes regularly. If you are later or absent, your grade goes down. If you are absent for 3 consecutive lessons, you will be dropped from the class. More than 4 absences in a MWF class or 3 absences in a TR class can result in a drop or a failing grade. If you are not in class during attendance check, you will be marked absent. You must see me after the class so that I mark you late. In the final grade, 2 late arrivals will count as 1 absence. But you will be marked absent if you arrive 20 minutes late. EAP 0120 MMont Page 1 of 3 Grades The final grade will be A (100-90), B (89-80), C (79-70), D (69-60), or F (59 or below), computed on: Attendance and class participation 15% Homework Assignments 15% Tests and Final Examination 70% 100%* *Exceptional initiative and contributions in class may be awarded extra credit. NOTE: You cannot take tests or the examination before or after the scheduled day. Cell phones Turn off your telephones during the lesson.
