Anatomy and Physiology Honors Instructor: Mary Lagro Phone: 704 528 4536 Email: mary_lagro@iss.k12.nc.us Description: Welcome to Anatomy and Physiology-The study of body forms and function! This semester we will learn about all of the major body systems. This is a work intensive class, and I expect each and every student to be prepared to learn each and every day. We will do a variety of activities such as notes, discussions, labs, dissections, blogs, and reading. Students are expected to study every day in an effort to be prepared. We will complete a project for nearly every body systems. Much of the work will be completed outside of class. Please do not procrastinate. Typically projects will not be accepted late. You should expect homework or studying every night for this class Required materials: Bring these to class EVERY DAY! Pens Colored pencils One folder with pockets Pencils 2 Composition notebooks Colored Notecards Glue stick/tape Scissors Optional: Lab supplies as needed or donations for lab supplies Grading: Grading will be tabulated based on a percentage Tests and Projects: 50% Quizzes: 10% Labs: 15 % Classwork/Homework/Discussions: 25% (this includes notebooks) When class time is made available for students to work independently, students are expected to work on their assignments for class. When due dates are set students are expected to turn in their work at that time. Honors: This is an honors level science course. Honors Anatomy is weighted one point higher in the GPA (For example, a B in an honors level class is equivalent to an A in a standard level class). For this reason honors are typically paced faster, require more projects and independent work, and have additional written responses on assessments. SMART Lunch: SMART Lunch is for tutoring and make-up work. Students may receive tutoring or come in and tutor another student. SMART Lunch points will be given to students who attend a SMART Lunch Session AND are doing Anatomy and Physiology. Students can earn up to 1 point per session per day. Make-up work: It is the student’s responsibility to ask for make-up work. Students must see me before school, after school or during smart lunch to obtain any missing work. Typically late work will be found in the folder at the front of the classroom. Re-do Requests: Students will have the opportunity to re-work any assignment for full credit at teacher discretion. This does not mean students may make up any work at any time. Students must submit an email to both the parent/guardian and myself explaining why they need to redo/retest. The email must state why they need to retest, the course of action they will take to study and relearn the material, a timeframe for completion of retest, and a guardian response within two days of the assignment being missing. Students are required to show proof of relearning and may have to attend a before or after school remediation as directed by the instructor. Homework: Students will have homework nearly every evening. Classwork not completed during class is considered homework. It is due the NEXT DAY. Students are expected to study at least fifteen minutes every day. Studying is NOT having the book open next to you while you are on instagram. Reviewing notes, studying vocabulary via study blue/quizlet, watching science videos on relevant topics are all excellent ways to study. Study Groups: I encourage students to work together in study groups to learn material presented in class. Anatomy is a work-intensive honors course. Reviewing the information is crucial and many students may find it beneficial to work with others. Late Work: Due to the overwhelming amount of late work I received last semester. Students may turn in their work late. However, I reserve the right to grade at my earliest convenience. This may not occur until the end of the semester. There is a late work basket in the front of the room. Please utilize it for your late work. Classroom Expectations 1. Respect- Respect yourself, respect each other, respect the organisms used in lab, respect personal and school property. 2. Participate- Actively and appropriately. This includes bringing materials to class every day, listening during lectures, writing notes, not speaking while others are talking. 3. Arrive on time- When you arrive begin working on the warm-up. 4. Keep electronic devices in your backpack. *Electronics may be used at teacher discretion.* 5. Keep food, drinks, and candy out of the classroom and lab area. Bottled water is allowed in classroom areas. 6. Do what you are supposed to do when you are supposed to do it. Attendance Policy: The attendance policy, consistent with the student handbook states students are to attend all classes each day on time. Read the handbook, understand it. This means being in your seat when attendance in being taken. Hall Passes: Students must remain in the classroom the first and last ten minutes of class. This is for the sake of correct attendance in case of emergency. Use the bathroom and get water before the start of class. Students will only be allowed to leave class during classwork and not during lectures. Please review the rules/procedures with your parents/guardian and sign the attached white sheets to verify that you have been informed of Ms. Lagros’ classroom policies. White sheets must be signed and turned back in to Ms. Lagro by Monday. If you or your parents/guardians have any any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Please Sign And Return This Form To Miss Lagro by Friday January 30th.
