A note from the teacher:
Week of September 7th
Learning Targets this Week:
Math: 3.NBT.1: Use place value understanding to round
whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
Class Dojo is up and running! We currently have 17 parents
connected. Thank you so much for jumping on board. I am
excited to be able to give parents immediate feedback. I
have sent invites to parents who have not yet joined. If you
did not receive an invite please email me and let me know
and I will send another. If you have any questions do not
hesitate to contact me. Thanks for your support.
Homework Update:
Students have both math and reading each night MondayThursday. Please be sure to sign your child’s reading each
night in their agenda. Students are showing responsibility as
they organize their binder, complete the math problems and
reading at home, and bring it back the next day. Our goal is
to have 100% of our students complete all homework.
Thanks for your support. Please see last week’s Covington
Chronicle for additional information on homework
procedures.
Vocabulary:
Each week we will be focusing on 3 or more vocabulary words that
go with a story. This is a great way to increase student’s vocabulary
which will help them immensely with their reading comprehension.
We read A Bad Case of the Stripes last week and focused on the
words: fretting, contagious, impress, remedy, vanished, and
distraction. Students were able to create sentences using these
words and correctly apply them to everyday life. Several students
even found our vocabulary words as they read independently. We
will quiz on the words each Friday.
Next week we will be reading Chrysanthemum and focusing on the
words: miserably, wilted, humorous. Please try to use these words
in everyday conversation to help reinforce the meaning.
We will begin class snack on Tuesday, September 8th!!! We will have a
"working snack" during the first 10 minutes of our math block (10:3010:40) because we have such a late lunch. You may begin sending in a
healthy snack next week for your child. We will not be doing "community
snacks" due to many of our students having food allergies. Do not send
any drink other than water. Snacks should be one item that the student
can independently open and that isn't messy. Please do not send in
sweet and sticky items such as cakes, brownies, frosted cookies, or
cupcakes. Some great snack choices are:
fresh fruit (apple, banana, etc), cut up vegetables (carrots, celery,
etc), cheese sticks, oyster crackers, cheese crackers, raisins,
pretzels, goldfish, graham crackers, granola/protein bar, dry cereal
Last week we practiced rounding numbers to the
nearest ten and hundred. We used a hundred chart to
help identify which two base tens a given number fell
between. Students were then able to draw a number
line, plot numbers, and determine which ten the given
number was closest to. Students will continue to dig
deeper this week working on word problems and
relating rounding to real life situations. We will have a
quiz on Friday.
Literacy: 3.RL.1: I can ask and answer questions to show
that I understand what I’ve read.
*Using text dependent questions including those that
are explicit in the text, those that a reader can think
and search for, and those that a reader has to think and
apply their own knowledge to answer.
Last week we practiced our reading stamina. We also
worked on asking questions as we read to monitor our
comprehension. Students came up with strategies to
find answers as they read and used post-it notes to keep
track of their question and answers as they read
independently. We read The Mary Celeste and students
had many questions about the mysterious story of the
crew that vanished.
