Advocacy Campaign
Although the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s has long passed, racial inequalities
and other social issues continue in the United States today. While great strides have
been made through the law, problems persist in the enforcement of civil and human
rights. What is a social issue that you care deeply about?
Some ideas include but are not limited to:






Affordable housing
Poverty and welfare
Child welfare
LGBT rights
Public health
Affirmative action






Environmental justice
Refugee asylum
Gender equality
Disabilities
Death penalty
Reproductive rights
Research the major current-day issues surrounding the topic of your choice
(approved by me if not on the list). Answer and provide the following:
1. What federal laws have been passed around these issues?
2. Are they being enforced in local communities?
3. What laws would you like passed or plans of action implemented in
support of your position?
4. Provide a correct MLA formatted works cited (2-3 sources).
Once you have devised your opinions and conducted your research, start a letterwriting campaign to a representative and/or senator from North Carolina. You will
need to find their contact information as we will be sending your letters in order to
urge them to consider your recommendations. That being said, your letter needs to
be in correct format and professionally written with credible support (parenthetical
citations). You will be given the correct letter template to use.
