Capital High School
Business/Marketing Work-Based Learning Program
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Work-Based Learning experience provides students with opportunities to gain exposure to an
occupational area related to their interests and career goals. This experience can help students identify
some of the needed skills, knowledge, and preparation desired for employees. It can also help students
understand the relevancy of their academic, technical and classroom work. Students will receive
.5 semester credit based upon their performance at the work site, documentation of 180 hours worked
per semester, and completion of school assignments and paperwork related to the program.
ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS:
To be eligible for Business/Marketing Work-Based Learning, students must be concurrently enrolled or
have successfully completed a Business/Marketing course at Capital High School. Students may enroll in
Work-Based Learning 6th period and have early release to go to their job or 8th period in which work
takes place after the school day.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students, with parent/guardian guidance, and employer participation will complete the following:
 Training Agreement AND Training Plan
 Student Report for WBL (documentation of 180 work hours)
 WBL Student Evaluation (by employer)
 Resume and typed list of references
 Final
Note: The training agreement and training plan must be in place BEFORE hours can be counted
toward credit.
The Training Agreement spells out what the work site supervisor must do, what the student must do
and what the school must do for the program to be successful.
The Training Plan is developed with the cooperation of the WBL Coordinator, the work site supervisor,
and the student. The training plan sets forth specific learning objectives for the student to develop
throughout the WBL experience. These learning objectives will be tied directly to the student
evaluation.
The Student Report for WBL is completed weekly per pay period to document the number of hours
worked. This form (along with pay stubs) will be used to document attendance at the work site.
Students must earn 180 work hours per semester to earn .5 credit. 90 – 179 hours = .25 credit.
The WBL Student Evaluation is used by the work site supervisor to evaluate the student’s progress
during each trimester. The Evaluation of Objectives is where tasks and learning objectives written on
the training plan will be evaluated.
GRADING:
Grades will be determined on the completeness, quality and timeliness of the following items:
 Evaluation from Employer
 Deadlines met for all required paperwork
 Current Resume and References
 Final: project TBD
For an “A” grade, students must consistently turn in the required paperwork on time, record hours twice
monthly, meet all of their learning goals on their training plan, meets and in some areas exceed
employer expectations on the evaluation, and complete a quality resume.
Students who enroll in the program and complete the course requirements but do not meet the hours
requirement may receive partial credit or an Incomplete until the requirement is met (provided the
hours are earned within the school’s period for completing Incompletes) After this period has passed,
grades will be changed to a NC (no credit)
Students who enroll in the program who do not complete the course requirements, do not meet the
hours requirements, and/or terminated from their jobs will receive a FAILING grade.
It is the student’s responsibility to communicate regularly (every 2 weeks) with the coordinator
regarding progress on the job and to turn in work hours. Failure to do so will result in a lower grade.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILILITES:
Each student will have their own file located in Mrs. Fabritius’ room, E2. Mrs. Fabritius will maintain the
student files. However; it is the responsibility each student to check in once every two weeks to
document hours. Additionally, students are required to do the following by Week 3 of each semester:
 Obtain parent signature on the Training Plan and Training Agreement
 Meet with Mrs. Fabritius to establish learning objectives for WBL training plan
**Note: documentation of hours cannot begin until these forms are completed. In other words, hours
worked before this won’t count toward the 180 needed for credit.
Every week:
 Document hours on form in student file in E2
 Turn in pay stubs to Fabritius weekly or monthly
 Your grade will be lowered if you do not turn in hours regularly
By end of semester:
 Complete a quality resume (for samples and assistance visit the career center) which includes
current employment
 Complete a typed list of at least 3 references (not relatives). Include name, company, address and
phone number
 Verify documentation of hours worked and obtain employer signature on form
