WELCOME TO MATH 6 Mrs. Gammache Stone Hill Middle School 2015 – 2016 Overview Expectations Grading Policy The topics covered in this class are aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). These content strands include: Number and Number Sense Computation and Estimation Measurement and Geometry Probability, Statistics, Patterns, Functions, and Algebra Every Math 6 student is expected to put forth their best effort in each and every math class. The Math 6 curriculum is dense and the skills build upon one another. It is critical that all students keep up with lessons and prepare for each and every assessment. If a student struggles with a particular concept, additional math support will be provided through resource. Our guidance counselors also maintain a list of tutors, if needed. At Stone Hill, we strive to be “Respectful RAYS” where Respect Always Yields Success! In our class, we observe the importance of: Respecting Yourself Respecting Others Respecting School Property and the Property of Others What does this look like in class? Students should arrive to class on time. Students should be prepared to learn with the appropriate materials. Students should follow directions and participate in class appropriately. Students should use classroom and school provided equipment with care. Practice Assignments: In order to acquire and master new Math skills, students must participate in frequent practice activities. The Math 6 team views “homework” as an essential part of that practice. While homework completion is monitored in class, homework is not considered when calculating a student’s grade. Students will be asked to complete any missing assignments during lunch, resource or at home. Formative Assessments: Formative assessments, which include class work, warm-ups, check-ups, and other measures of student learning, are administered frequently during each unit of study. Formative assessments are used to inform teacher instruction and to measure a student’s progression toward proficiency of a particular standard. They also help to identify when a student may need extra help during resource or at home. Formative assessments are not considered when calculating a student’s grade. Summative Assessments: During and at the conclusion of a unit of study, students will participate in a series of summative assessments (Quizzes & Tests) to measure their current level of proficiency with that set of standards. Summative assessment scores are the only measures of student learning considered when calculating a student’s quarterly grade. Math 6 Re-take Policy: At Stone Hill, we emphasize the importance of continuous learning and skill mastery. To ensure that all learners have the opportunity to be successful in Math, students have the opportunity to improve their skill proficiency. Quiz grades may increase at the end of the unit if the Unit Test performance indicates skill improvement on the standards measured by a Quiz. A Quiz grade will be replaced with the Unit Test grade if the Unit Test grade is higher than a previous Quiz grade during that unit. Unit Test grades are the final grade issued per Unit. These grades are not subject to revision. However, the Math 6 team requires students to re-take a Unit Test if they do not demonstrate proficiency (at least 70%). Only one re-take is permitted per Unit Test. When a re-take is required, the following procedure is in place: 1. Students attempt and turn in corrections to all questions marked incorrect on a test re-take form. 2. Students receive extra help during Resource to go over these corrections. 3. Students re-take the Unit Test during Resource. 4. Students may earn up to a 70% on the re-take. The higher of the two attempts on a Unit Test, if required, is recorded. Agenda Supplies An agenda is NOT provided by Stone Hill. However, students are required to record all homework assignments and upcoming assessments in some way. In the event that a student forgets to record an assignment, students can view the assignment details on the Math 6 team page on the Stone Hill website. It is important, however, that students develop the habit of keeping track of assignments on their own. Parents are encouraged to work with their child to establish a method for assignment recording. Please bring the following supplies to class each block: (1) 3-ring binder (2 inch size) 12 notebook dividers loose leaf paper (1) 100 ct. pack 3 x 5 ruled index cards pencils with erasers grading pen (any color other than black) Calculators, rulers, and protractors are provided by the math department when needed. *Please feel free to donate other supplies such as tissue boxes, fine tip dry erase markers, extra pencils, erasers and loose leaf paper for our class supply at any time* Notebook Students are required to maintain an organized Math notebook containing all instructional materials given in a specified order. An organized notebook will help students prepare for unit, quarter, and end of year assessments. Parents are encouraged to frequently check their child’s notebook for graded work and organization. Textbook Mathematics Applications and Concepts Course 2, Glencoe, 2005 The Math 6 team does not issue textbooks to individual students. Students will have access to a math textbook during class, but they will not be sent home for homework purposes. Below is the address for the online version of our text. This site also provides valuable practice and study resources that can be utilized throughout the year. The Glencoe website does not function properly with Google Chrome. http://www.glencoe.com/sites/virginia/student/mathematics/index.html User Name - mac2va05 Contact Information Password - p3ap4etr Mrs. Gammache can be reached: by Phone at 703-957-4420 by Email at Lori.Gammache@lcps.org Please allow 48 hours for a response to email contact.
