Algebra II with Mrs. Hanby Potomac Falls High School 2015 – 2016 School Year Welcome to Algebra II Welcome to Algebra II. I am looking forward to an exciting and productive year. The information in this handout is important and I expect you to share it with your parents. Algebra II provides a review and extension of the concepts taught in Algebra 1. Topics covered will include equations and inequalities, coordinates and graphs, general function families, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences and series, and permutations and combinations Graphing calculators will be used extensively in this course. In addition, we will cover topics such as normal distributions, variances, and standard deviation. Throughout this course, students will develop learning strategies, critical thinking skills, and problem solving techniques to prepare for future math courses and college entrance exams. Algebra II students will earn one verified math credit after passing the course and the SOL. The SOL will be administered sometime in May and we will spend time reviewing for the test weekly leading up to the exam. VA SOL resources are available on the VDOE website. If at any time of the year you need to contact me, please or email me at lee.hanby@lcps.org or call 571-4343200 and ask for the math workroom. I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am available every morning after 8:15 am by appointment. I place strong emphasis on student responsibility and respect. Each student is respected as an important member of the class and is expected to treat others in the same manner. We will be using Remind 101 for this class to send out reminders about upcoming assessments and due dates. Please see information sheet on how to sign up via text message or email. My expectations of you are: Be Prompt: Arrive before the tardy bell rings, sit in you assigned seat, and start your warm-up. Be Polite: Respect yourself, others, and your surroundings. Always use good manners. Leaving Class: Agenda must be signed and you are limited to 5 minutes. If you have an emergency, you need to discuss this with me. Adhere to PFHS Policies: This includes honor code and dress code. Failure to follow classroom rules and expectations will result in disciplinary action. I am sure you will put forth your best effort to achieve the highest level of success. I look forward to helping you achieve that success. Be Prepared: Come to class with all the necessary materials (including a pencil) and ready to begin class on time. Bring your calculator! Grading Grading is done on a percentage basis. Tests will be announced 2-4 days before the actual test. There will be no re-takes on tests. There will be daily homework quizzes which be included in your formative grade. There will be quarterly assessments which will be cumulative. These will be used to demonstrate your mastery of prior skills. “Extra Credit” will not be given. Homework is assigned after every class for practice. It will be monitored for completeness. Whenever a student is absent, a reasonable amount of time will be given for the student to make up work. The sooner the work is made Be Productive: Follow all instructions and put forth your best effort. Complete all assignments. Do not pack up until told to do so-we work until the bell. up, the sooner the student will be back on track with the class. Class notes will be posted to my website the day after class. Please note that it is the student’s responsibility for checking for missed assignments. Being absent on the day of the test/quiz means you will take the test/quiz the next class after your return.
