A Pure Utilitarian’s Solution for the Problem of Drunk Driving
You are a pure utilitarian. You have been given this assignment by the local police chief, the
director of safety and transportation, and the mayor:
Our community is plagued by two problems that have caused both destruction of property,
personal injury, and loss of life. What’s the cause? Despite laws prohibiting both texting while
driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, our local drivers continue to
drive while distracted and drive while impaired.
These two problems are separate but related, and they need solutions.
Your job is to find solutions to these two problems. We don’t want to lower the rate of accidents
caused by distracted drivers and by impaired drivers. We want to completely eradicate the
problem from our local roads.
From the perspective of a pure utilitarian, find solutions to each of these problems. Remember
that the result is the goal – no distracted drivers, no impaired drivers.
Find you solutions in the way that you think best – lists, columns, paragraphs, diagrams, idea
webs, and so on.
Show your thinking and your solutions on this page.
