The Cuban Revolution against
Spain began on February 24, 1895.

0 General Weyler reacted to
the revolution by
introducing terror
methods: periodic
executions, mass exile,
destruction of farms and
crops.
0 Weyler's methods reached
their height on October 21,
1896, when he ordered all
countryside residents and
their livestock to gather in
various fortified areas and
towns occupied by his
troops within 8 days and
put into concentration
camps.
0 Hundreds of
thousands of
people had to
leave their
homes, creating
appalling and
inhumane
conditions in
the crowded
towns and
cities.
It is
estimated
that this
measure
caused the
death of at
least one
third of
Cuba's rural
population.
225,000
Cuban
civilians
died in 18
months
1896-97.
United
States
businesses
had invested
millions of
dollars in
Cuba's sugar
and tobacco
industry.
"LET GO OF HIM MCKINLEY!"
Many Americans
thought we should
go help the
Cubans to gain
independence.
The United States
government wanted to
stay out of war if
possible, but also felt
the need to protect
American business
interests in Cuba.

The U.S.S Maine is sent to
Havana Harbor, Cuba to
protect Americans and
American business interests.
4 weeks later, the U.S.S Maine mysteriously
explodes at 9:40 pm on February 15, 1898
killing 266 American men.
