He moved the royal residence to the island of Capri, off Italy’s coast. At risk of assassination, he chose the site chiefly because the remote location made it easy to defend - but also so that he could indulge his sick fantasies away from prying eyes. He was a cruel tyrant. He put to death a great many people only because he thought they were his enemies. If he did not like a person, he would charge him with some crime and order his soldiers to kill him. He would do this by throwing them off the 300 foot cliff of his palace. Anybody that was lucky enough to survive the fall were met by men in boats who would bash their heads in with paddles. he was himself killed by a man named Caligula. _____________________- these next two emperors also put many people to death without just cause. __________________- He became emperor in the year 54 A.D. _____________________-Nero was the son of this woman. She married the Emperor Claudius. Then she killed Claudius by poison, and Nero became emperor. He turned her out of his palace and ordered her never to appear there again His mother tried to push to replace him as emperor. He would have three guards go and kill his mother in a way that it would look like suicide. Then, he forced his adoptive stepsister and wife Claudia Octavia to commit suicide. Then he then killed his new wife, Poppaea, in a fit of passion. Then, became enamored with a slave boy/freedman who resembled his dead wife Poppea. He had the boy castrated, married him and made him dress and act like a woman. NONE of the emperors before Nero lived so grandly as he did. _______________- Half the city was burned. Some of the Romans said that Nero had started the fire and had prevented it from being put out. Most of the six days during which the fire lasted Nero spent in a high tower, enjoying the sight. Nero played on his harp, sang merry songs, and recited verses about the burning of the ancient city of Troy. Nero said that it had been caused by the believers in the religion of Christ. _____________- Romans hated these people. ________________- Christians would practice their faith in these underground burial chambers.
