Communication It is important to maintain a clear line of communication between teacher, student, and parents. To address any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone at (703) 957 – 4340 or by email at kjersti.smedley@lcps.org (however, this email will be changing VERY VERY soon as I recently married the love of my life, and LCPS is currently changing my name in the system). Since I am often working with students during my resource block, please allow a leeway of up to 24 hours to respond. Please check my class webpage on a regular basis to find out assignments issued and topics discussed. Extra Help I will be available to those students who need extra help during resource block as well as before by appointment. Assessment Policy: This course demands a lot of work and I expect you to show your full potential. I am willing to help you in any way I can to help you be successful in math, although you must show your effort as well. Tests, quizzes and projects are your opportunity to share your knowledge with me. It is imperative, however, that you practice your learned skills by completing homework, bell ringers, and engaging in class daily. Students are welcome to come in for help before or after-school as long as previous arrangements are made. Each student begins each quarter with a 100% (A). Grades are intended to communicate a student’s understanding of the standards and mastery of the grade level concepts and skills. Grades and progress reports are used as communication tools between the teacher, student, and parents. These assignments are designed to reflect a natural learning progression: introduction, practice (formative), and mastery (summative). Introductory assignments are used to present new concepts/skills; practice assignments (these typically make up the majority of work) give students opportunities to develop their understanding of the new concepts/skills. Mastery assignments enable students to demonstrate their solid understanding of material presented. Formative assessments will be taken in class to determine students’ learning progression as they learn new concepts. The scale is as follows: 4 = Advanced Proficient 3 = Proficient 2 = Intermediate 1 = Beginner Summative assessments will be counted as part of your official grade for the quarter. This assessment of learning shows mastery of the curriculum content. These are rated on the LCPS grading scale and are also communicated to you and your parents. This includes Tests, Essential Knowledge Quizzes, projects, etc. Students will have opportunities to retake certain summative assessments for a higher grade. On summative assessments that are tests/quizzes the following policy applies: *An 81% cap applies to all retesting grades. We encourage, teach and model effective study skills to ensure students know how to prepare for assessments. This applies to all summative tests and quizzes. In addition, students need to be aware of the following: Grades on test retakes will replace previous grades (it is not an average). Teacher will notify parents of the upcoming retake. Teachers and students will agree to reasonable timelines for re-teaching and retesting opportunities. Students must be complete all work on time to be eligible for optional retakes. Students will work with teachers to re-learn material prior to the retake Absent Policy: Good attendance links to success! If students are absent, it is their responsibility to get their missing work. Check the website! Notes are updated to the website at the end of every B Day. Students may also check the homework calendar on the class website to keep up with homework. As soon as you arrive in class, after being absent, please retrieve your absent work. Complete your missed Interactive Notebook assignments and absent work ASAP (on your own time). Schedule any missed tests or quizzes ASAP during Resource. Our first Summative Test is Integer Operations September 21/22, depending if you are A or B Day! August 31, 2015 Dear Parents and Students, During the first few days of school we will review the procedures and routines for our class. By signing this form: 1. Your student is agreeing to abide by these procedures and routines. Students are also agreeing to strive to be a successful and responsible citizen in and out of the classroom. 2. Parents are agreeing to stand beside their child and understand that their seventh grade student will be held accountable and responsible for his or her actions. 3. Ms. Oliver agrees that each student will be treated fairly through these routines and procedures and to walk beside each student as they succeed this year. Please read over the Guide to Ms. Oliver’s Class and have your students explain each item to you. This will not only allow you to see what we have covered but will help the students better learn the routines of the class. This also should answer any questions that you may have. This signed paper will be put in each student’s personal folder and will be used only during behavioral or academic conferences. However, if there are any questions you are more than welcome to contact me via e-mail or phone.
