Introduction to Biology: Learning Targets and Study Guide
Science Safety, Characteristics of Life, and Scientific Investigation
Learning Targets and SOL Standards:
Learning Target 1: Science Safety (Bio. 1 h)
 I can understand the principles of and reasons for using safe practices while in the lab and
classroom.
Learning Target 2: Characteristics of Life (Bio. 2d; 3a; 4b; 5 a and g; 7c; 8b)
 I can discuss and analyze the eight characteristics of life and justify why each of the eight
characteristics of life is necessary to define an organism as living.
Learning Target 3: Scientific Investigation (Bio. 1 a, b, c, h, j, and k)
 I can design and conduct an investigation based off a hypothesis/null hypothesis to test a
single variable in a controlled experiment.
Learning Target 4: Data Analysis (Bio. 1 d, e, f, g, I, I, and m)
 I can conduct an investigation that requires the use of appropriate technology (Excel) to
collect, analyze, and report data to answer a research question.

Introduction to Biology Review Sheet
Designing an Experiment
Experimental Scenario #1:
Allen read that the gas company was burying sheets of
magnesium next to pipelines in order to prevent rusting. He
decided to investigate the effectiveness of various metals in
preventing rusting. He placed the following into three
separate test tubes of water: A) Iron nail. B) Iron nail
wrapped with aluminum strip. C) Iron nail wrapped with
magnesium. He used the same amount of water, equal
amounts of the metals, and the same size iron nails. At the
end of five days, he recorded the amount of rusting and the
color of the water.

Creating a Histogram
Consider the set {3, 11, 12, 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 29, 35, 36, 37, 45, 49} and create a histogram that bins that
data into convenient ranges. In this case, with a bin width of 10, we can easily group the data. Create a data
table so show the bins and a graph to display the histogram below.
