Treaty of Versailles
 Treaty of Versailles brought an end to the war between Germany and the Allied Powers.
The other countries in the Central Powers were dealt with in separate treaties.

The Treaty was signed in June 1919
What happened to Germany?
The Treaty of Versailles:

Forced Germany to accept full blame for the war

Stripped Germany of its colonies and armed forces

Forced Germany to pay $33 billion in war reparations
And what else happened?

The Treaty of Versailles also divided up the empires of Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman
Empire

The Treaty also established the League of Nations.
But not so fast…
The United States never ratified(approved) the treaty. Many members of Congress did not want
the US to join the League of Nations because they did not want more foreign commitments.
Did it work?

The Treaty failed to make Europe “safe for democracy”

Germany resented the treaty and this helped plant the seeds for WWII
