• There are both Formal and informal qualifications to
being president
FORMAL QUALIFICATIONS
1. Be a “natural born citizen”

• set the order of succession
following the Vice President.
• The 25th Amendment,

THE VP CAN BECOME THE PRESIDENT
• If the president dies.
• If the president is disabled in some way
• This can happen in two ways
1. the President informs Congress, in writing,
“that he is unable to discharge the powers
and duties of his office,” or
2. the Vice President and a majority of the
members of the Cabinet inform Congress, in
writing, that the President is thus
incapacitated.
