HOME SWEET HOME During the 1920s, most homes get electric lighting for the first time! What are some of the benefits of this major change? Most houses are also introduced to new labor-saving products such as the washing machine, electric stoves, and water pumps. These products mean people have to do less work (labor) around the house! 5. ROARING CINEMA Thanks to new labor saving products, people have a little more free time in the 1920s. People can go to Sears and purchase some of the latest advancements in communications! -Increased availability of the telephone helped individuals and businesses communicate over long distances. -The radio and its broadcast industry allow every home to enjoy news, advertisements, and weekly episodic radio dramas! 4. FLY AWAY TRAVEL AGENCY The airplane was invented in 1903 by the Wright Brothers (Orville and Wilbur). By the 1920’s people could now use the invention for personal travel. Tickets were expensive, but that’s no problem for you! Where are you going to fly??? 6. PETE’S “PET SHOP” After the movies, some decide to go to “Pete’s” Pet Shop, which is really a speakeasy! Speakeasy: Off the map bar were people secretly met to buy alcohol. Why hide? Prohibition: In 1920, in response to the Temperance Movement, the 18th Amendment banned the making, transporting, and selling of alcohol.
