Reporters Without Borders
Not all governments respect freedom of the press. Some governments retain control over
news organizations. They implement laws that restrict the media. Reporters Without Borders, a
group based in France, works to expand freedom of the press worldwide. Since its founding in
1985, the group has tried to persuade some governments to alter the way they treat the media.
Each year Reporters Without Borders examines freedom of the press in the
contemporary world. They ask journalists and legal experts from around the world fifty
questions about freedom of the press in their home countries. The group publishes the survey
results in the Worldwide Press Freedom Index. Countries whose governments constrain the
news the least are ranked the highest. Those that restrict the news the most are ranked lowest.
Reporters Without Borders publishes the index to educate the public and put pressure on the
countries that are lowest on the list.
Sometimes conflicts arise between government officials and journalists; sometimes
governments exclude journalists from important meetings and restrict freedom of the press.
Reporters Without Borders often helps these journalists. The group investigates cases in which
journalists have been mistreated or arrested for reporting the facts as they see them. Reporters
Without Borders also maintains information about the considerable challenges that journalists
deal with in war zones. These journalists are exposed to the dangers of war as well as
government opposition.
Some governments impose extra restrictions on the press during times of war. Why do
you think they do this?
