THE MONSTER
MESSENGER
October 2014
Fall is in the air!!!
Happy Autumn!
Curriculum Corner
It’s hard to believe that it is already October.
As we settle into the school year, the children
are becoming more and more comfortable with
their new routines in first grade. Research shows
that consistent school attendance correlates with
positive student achievement. With that said, I
am amazed at how few students have been absent
thus far. Thank you for not only keeping your
children in school regularly, but also for getting
them here on time!
This first month of school has included some review
material for many of the students. As we move into
this month, we will begin our weekly homework
assignments. If you have any questions about these,
please let me know. Look for the weekly homework
packets in your child’s blue folder (in the binder)
every Monday.
If you ever have any questions, my email address
is: mary.lazzaro@lcps.org
Parent/Teacher Conferences
My conferences with parents begin later this
month. I sent out reminders today so please let
me know if you have any conflicts. In addition, I
still need to touch base with some of you to
schedule a conference. Please feel free to come
prepared with any questions you may have for me.

Math will focus on number sense (counting 1-100),
measurement (calendar) and problem solving. Science
will center on the Sun and Earth, changes in fall,
plants, and animals (preparing for winter). Our social
science units will focus on past/present, bus safety
and Christopher Columbus.
In Language Arts, our Pathways reading program will
focus on working with words, shared reading, guided
reading and Writer’s Workshop. Please make sure
that your children are studying for their weekly
spelling tests. There is a sheet in their binders that
has all sorts of activities that they can do with their
weekly word sorts. It is important that the students
are studying their words each night. We have
finished our PALS testing, but will be completing our
DRA testing this month. The students will begin
meeting in small reading groups with me. These groups
are determined by the students’ performance on the
PALS test and the reading levels achieved on the DRA
tests. I look forward to meeting and working with the
students in these groups. Please be sure to ask your
children about the strategies they are learning to use
in these groups. We will focus on the areas of
comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expanding
vocabulary.
Thank you, Thank you!
Thank you to everyone who sent in
wipes, Kleenex and plastic bags. We
will need these items, along with
glue sticks and dry erase markers,
throughout the year. I’ll accept
them whenever any of you feel like
sending some in to us.
Volunteer Central
All volunteers should have received the volunteer
schedules for October and November recently.
Thank you to all those parents who have offered
their time in and out of the classroom.
