This-Month’s Edition December 5th , 2014 What’s Up in 3rd Grade? This just in…Upcoming Events! “An Elephant Never Forgets” Reminder Thank You WHAT’S UP IN 3RD GRADE? In Social Studies we are beginning our Ancient Greece unit (test 12/12). It will be followed by our unit on Ancient Rome. The will be working on making connections between Ancient Greek and Roman life and the many things we use today! In reading and language arts we will continue to work in our guided reading Power-Up groups. We have also been working on Interactive Read Aloud fiction and non-fiction Text features. In writing we have begun our unit on information texts. Please discuss with your 3rd grader some things they may be experts in to facilitate their writing about Non-Fiction topics for this unit. Please continue to practice math facts by logging on to reflex.com at least three times a week at home, especially during winter break to maintain and increase automaticity. Knowing math facts and being able to recite them quickly is essential in third grade. This week we continue our multiplication unit and we will soon be expecting 3rd graders to know their times tables from 0-12 as well! We will gradually build multiplication fact fluency over the next few months. As your 3rd grader improves they will be given the opportunity to earn “scoops of ice-cream” as proof that they know their times tables! Multiplication flash cards will be sent home shortly to assist them with this. THIS JUST IN… WINTER FESTIVAL Please check your child’s Red Folder for information about the class winter party. We will be holding our party on Thursday Dec 18th beginning at 1:30-2:30. You are very welcome and join us. I am currently looking for a parent volunteer to organize it!
