Ms. Johnson’s
December Newsletter 2015
Greetings Parents,
Hard to believe we are almost out on Winter Break isn’t it! Just wanted to tell you
all some very important things coming up before we leave 2015 behind.
A Big Thank You!
In conjunction with our One To The World project of becoming hometown heroes,
we will soon be delivering boxes of new and gently used books to the students of
Rolling Ridge Elementary. Third grade students have made posters, HTV
announcements and commercials, and have been able to collect hundreds of
books leveled K-5 grade! We will be delivering the boxes to the students of
Rolling Ridge ES Tuesday the 14th. Thanks for making our book drive a success!
Party!!!
Our Winter Party will be held on Wednesday, December 16. The children can
bring in their favorite board games to play in class. Make sure it is a game that
most children know how to play. No video games or battery operated games
please. We will do a craft, receive gifts/treats from Ms. J, and play our favorite
games. The fun will start at 12:30 and last until 2:00. You are welcome to come
and join us.

What Are We Learning….
Math

Your child is mastering all multiplication times tables up to the 12’s AND related division facts.
Quizzes to assess these facts have been ongoing. We are on 5’s and 6’s now. If you have not
seen 2 minute timed quizzes coming home with a perfect score of 4 then your child needs to spend
extra time learning these facts. I have links on my website for practice. In addition the children
need to have set of multiplication flash cards to practice at home. Congratulations to those
students who have passed all quizzes so far. We are now beginning our unit on how to master the
inverse operation of multiplication which is division.
Reading
 Students should continue to read at least 20 minutes every night.
 All students are to write down what they read at home and in school in their reading log.
 Students are to do word study homework each night and mark off their word study check off sheet.
in the red homework folder.
 We are learning how to indentify main ideas in passages and prove it with supporting details.
Writing



All class authors are writing on a variety of topics in their writing journals.
Students need to use the Writer’s Checklist to make corrections before turning in all work.
We are learning how to make our stories more interesting by adding a setting, action, or dialogue
lead in with descriptive sentences.
Science/social studies


In Science we will be learning about energy resources and simple & compound machines.
Look for study materials to come home when testing is announced in the weekly agenda.
In Social Studies we are finishing our geography and map skills unit. Test on Thursday,
December 10. Use my web links to help your child learn all oceans and continent
locations. A study guide was sent home last week.
Thanks for making our time together in 2015 a positive and happy one. I am very thankful to be here at
Horizon ES. Teaching your children. I wish you all safe and happy holidays in December. See you next
year!
Sincerely,
Ms. Johnson
