Legacy Elementary Ashburn, VA De ce m b e r 1 , 2 01 5 Vol u m e 1 , I s s ue 4 Mrs. Hetey’s December News Language Arts *In reading groups, students are focusing on vocabulary development and answering a wide variety of questions about what they are reading. They need to be able to interpret and reflect upon what they are reading. Groups are reading both fiction and non-fiction stories. *This month, our class will learn about Jan Brett and discover many of her wonderful stories & illustrations, which are perfect for wintertime. *In writing, we will begin our “How To” unit. Students will be taught the skills needed to explain directions in a meaningful and sequential manner. They will learn about topic sentences, using starter and transition words, and how to explain clear steps with details. Social Studies & Science In Social Studies: We will compare the lives and contributions of three American Indian cultures of the past and present, with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the Pueblo people of the Southwest. (SOL 2.2) We will be locating the regions of the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo Indians on United States maps. (SOL 2.4 C) We will also gain an understanding of the relationship between the environment and the culture of the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo Indians. (SOL 2.4 D) In Science (After Break): We will cover the characteristics of natural and artificial magnets, magnetism, metals, magnetic/non-magnetic, north and south poles, attract/repel, and magnetic compass. (SOL 2.2) Math The concepts covered this month will be: SOL 2.5 We will continue to recall addition facts with sums to 20 or less and the corresponding subtraction facts. SOL 2.6 We will find & estimate the sum when given two whole numbers whose sum is 99 or less. SOL 2.7 We will find & estimate the difference when given two whole numbers whose sum is 99 or less. SOL 2.17 We will learn to construct, read & interpret bar, picture, & pictographs SOL 2.18 We will use data from experiments to predict outcomes Polar Express Day On December 15th, we will be celebrating winter by reading and watching The Polar Express. To get in the mood, we invite all students to wear their PJ’s and come ready for hot chocolate and other fun things! Thank You Parents Thank you very much for joining us for American Education Week.
