Rules for rounding:

If the number you are rounding is followed by a 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9,
round the number UP.
Example: 38 rounded to the nearest tens place is 40.

If the number you are rounding is followed by a 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4,
round the number DOWN.
Example: 33 rounded to the nearest tens place is 30.
When you are rounding inside of a big number:

Circle the place in the number that you are rounding to

Underline the digit to the right of the place you circled

If that number is 5 or higher, you will round the number you circled up one and the
digits to the right change to zero. (Digits to the LEFT are LEFT ALONE)

If that number is 4 or lower, the number you circled will stay the same and the digits
to the right change to zero. (Digits to the LEFT are LEFT ALONE)
Ex: Round 4,687 to the nearest thousand.
4, 687
The 6 is greater than 5 so you round the 4 to 5 and the numbers to the right change to 0.
Answer: 5,000
