First Grade Newsletter April 2015 Tolbert Elementary Math For the month of April we will be learning about telling time to the hour and half hour and addition and subtraction strategies. By this point in the school year your child should be successful with completing 30 addition and subtraction facts through 10 in 3 minutes. He/she should be working towards the end of the year expectation of addition and subtraction facts through 18. To check your child’s progress, please make sure to look in his/her red take home folder. Content In social studies, we are learning about Australia’s culture and Virginia’s symbols. Upcoming Events April 6 Workday April 7 Moveable Monday April 7 Australia Assembly (might be the 8th) April 15 Muffins with Mom In science, we will be learning about natural resources and plants. We will be growing our own plants. April 22 Literacy Muffins with Mom In reading we continue to use poetry to focus on fluency skills. During read alouds we are focusing on similes and metaphors, onomatopoeia, poetry and retelling. In writing, we will be focusing on poetry and story writing. He/she should be spelling sight words correctly as well as stretching the sounds of unknown words. Additionally, it is expected that by the end of the year each child is able to independently write 4 sentences that focus on a topic. How you can help your child at home 1. Review word wall words. (They are listed on your child’s homework sheet.) 2. Read for 15-20 minutes every night. RAZ kids is a great resource! 3. Practice math facts. 4. Review papers sent home with your child to reinforce learning. 5. Practice tying shoes and zipping/fastening coats. Important Reminders Please remember to be respectful of learning when visiting for lunch and/or recess. Unless you have previously scheduled to volunteer, instructional time should not be interrupted. All money sent to school needs to be in a bag or an envelope labeled with the child’s name. If your child has a change in dismissal plans after the start of the day, please contact the office to notify the teacher. We are not always able to check email during the teaching day.
