Math News

We will learn to measure the length, width, volume, and weight of everyday objects using non-standard units. We will then begin a study of place value and numbers sense. Students will identify how many tens and ones are in numbers. We will be sending an “Estimation

Envelope” home with a different student each evening in the next few weeks. The purpose of this activity is for students to explore estimating a quantity of objects in a given set.

The directions will be on the estimation envelope. Please be sure to look for it to come home and return it to school the next day.

Reading Workshop News

We spend the first 50 minutes of every morning in Reading Workshop. We have been growing so much as readers! Each morning we gather on the carpet and learn a skill, strategy, or habit that students need to use during independent reading. Students then read “just-right books”,

(books they can read independently) they have chosen from our classroom library. During partner reading time, two students read together and discuss their reading. Finally, the whole class meets to share the strategy we used in our reading. We are currently reading nonfiction books. The strategies and skills we are learning include:

*We take a sneak peek in our nonfiction book to start our learning.

*We study each page closely in our nonfiction books to learn from pictures and other information.

*We reread to make sure we understand our books. We make our voices sound smooth and lively as we read.

*We talk about our books – sharing important information, interesting ideas and asking questions about what we read.

*We don’t let hard words get in our way! We use everything we know to solve tricky words.

*As strong readers we: read every day, we build our reading stamina, we take care of books, we protect our reading time, and we read “just right” books.

Thank you for supporting us in our reading habits and goals!!!!
