Math Vocabulary Review Geometry SOL 2.15ab, 2.16 Plane Shapes: Shapes that lie on a flat surface, such as a circle, a square, a triangle, and a rectangle. Circle: A plane figure in which all the points are the same distance from a point called the center. Square: A polygon that has four equal sides and four right angles. Triangle: A polygon with three sides. Rectangle: A quadrilateral with four right angles and opposite sides that are parallel and the same length. Solid Figure: A figure that has length, width, height, and volume. Flat Surface: An area that has length and width, but no thickness. Vertex (Vertices): A point (or points) where two sides or two or more edges meet. Edge: Where two flat surfaces of a solid figure meet. Cone: A solid figure with one circular base and one vertex. Cube: A solid figure with six faces that are all squares of the same size. Cylinder: A Solid figure with two congruent circular faces. Pyramid: A solid figure with a base that is a polygon and faces that are triangles with a common vertex. Rectangular Prism: A solid figure with six faces that are all rectangles. Sphere: A solid figure that has the shape of a round ball. Net: a Two-dimensional representation of the flat surfaces on a solid figure. Angle: Two sides with a common endpoint. Side: A line segment forming part of a plane figure. Congruent: Having the same size and the same shape. Line of Symmetry: A line on which a figure can be folded so that both halves are congruent. Turn: To rotate a plane figure. Flip: To turn a plane figure over. Slide: To move a plane figure in one direction. Pentagon: A polygon with five sides. Hexagon: A polygon with six sides. Parallelogram: A quadrilateral with each pair of opposite sides that are parallel. Trapezoid: A quadrilateral with only one pair of opposite sides that are parallel.
