Persuasive Techniques
7.3 I can understand the elements of media literacy.
a) I can identify persuasive/informative techniques used in non-print media.
d) I can compare and contrast the techniques in auditory, visual, and written media messages.
Bandwagon: A statement suggesting that
everyone is using a specific product, so you
should too.
Glittering Generalities and Card Stacking:
These techniques are similar. They tell only
part of the truth. The words “glitter,”
or sound good, but give no details about
the product.
Testimonials: Testimonials use celebrities
or authority figures to sell products or
services.
Name Calling: This creates a negative
attitude towards a product or service.
It uses hints, implications, and slanted
language to make you feel ill will towards
something or someone. This technique
is often used in political campaigns.
Plain Folks: This technique uses a
person who may be just like you to
sell a product or service.
Prestige/Snobbery: Uses a spokesperson
who appeals to the audience. The audience
wants to emulate the person in the ad
(I want that style!).
Appeal to Emotion: This strategy
Connects viewers with deep-seated
emotions: loyalty, family, pity, fear,
love, peace, justice, and/or love of
country.
