Overview:
Environmental Science (ES) is a class that combines information and skills from other sciences
(earth science, biology, chemistry and physics) as well as the social sciences. It involves frequent
trips outside to study and record nature. Scientific investigations will be conducted both in and out
of the classroom.
Materials:
- Outside Field Journal (marble composition notebook)
- Inside Notebook (spiral notebook) or Thin binder (½ inch) or folder with prongs
- Writing utensil
- Closed-toe shoes and socks. You must have spare socks in your locker.
- Rubber boots are provided but you may purchase your own
- Extra set of clothes to keep in locker. Appropriate field wear should be worn.
Working Outside:
ES is the only science class where students have the opportunity to go outside during class periods.
- Weather will be considered before going outside, but ground conditions can vary even on nice
weather days.
- Students will know ahead of time the dates proposed to go outside. Look for a green flag on
top of the doorway indicating we are going out.
- Responsible behavior will be expected from all students, to ensure safety on our trips. We
must stay as a group.
- On trips to Claude Moore Park (CMP), nothing may be removed from the park (except
trash)
- Bug spray is highly encouraged but cannot be provided by teacher.
- Cell phones may only be used for taking pictures of nature.
Lab Conditions:
All students participating in a science class will receive and sign a safety agreement.
- There will be no food permitted during laboratory experiments.
- You may keep a water bottle.
- Vandalism and tampering with safety equipment in a science lab will result in disciplinary
consequences requiring students to perform community service hours.
Academic Expectations:
Grades will be based on total points. Typical assignments include:
- Field Work
- Key Term Tests
- Field Journal
- Homework
- Projects/Labs/Worksheets
- Entrance or exit tickets
Deadlines, Extensions, and Make-up Work:
Your outdoor field journal will be collected 2-3 times per quarter. Due dates will be announced in
advance for all assignments and will be posted on the class website, as well as in the classroom.
- Assignments should be turned in on the date due.
- Any assignment turned in after the due date will drop one letter grade, or 10%, for each class
period it is missed.
- Make-up assignments must be turned in 1.5 weeks BEFORE the end of the quarter.
- Extensions will only be considered for family emergencies or grave illnesses. You must directly
speak with the teacher for consideration of an extension.
Absences:
If you are absent it is your responsibility to make up your missing work. This may include collecting
data from a classmate or coming in to replicate a lab. You must make-up missed tests! YOU are
responsible for insuring you have all the necessary notes and vocab to use on the test. You will
not be allowed to use another students notes for testing
