Characterization – ralph and simon
 Skinny, attractive, fair hair, 12 years old
 Ralph is excited
 Piggy finds it and Ralph uses it to call the others to the
platform. Piggy teaches Ralph how to use the conch.
 They treat Piggy with disrespect and they feel like they are
above him. Ralph is confident and had the conch. He also
gathered all of them to the platform in the first place.
 He gives Jack control over the choir group
Jack and Piggy
 Piggy: fat, wears glasses, has asthma, very insecure,
caring, intelligent, cleans glasses when uncomfortable
 Jack: tall, thin, freckles, red hair, blue eyes, strict, mean,
arrogant, controlling
 Piggy wanted to hold a meeting with all of the boys to
set up a system with a leader in order to survive. He is
indirectly responsible for the blowing of the conch
because he found it, came up with the idea to blow it so
gather other kids, and told Ralph how to use it.
 Jack feels superior to Piggy and is very cruel and
disrespectful towards him. Jack said, “Shut up, Fatty,”
and “We don’t want you, three’s enough,” when Piggy
wanted to walk around the island with them.
Discovery of the Shell- intro to power as it gathers all of
the boys on the island
Election- helped decide Ralph as the leader because he
was holding the shell.
The scar represents the plane crash and symbolizes
human barbarism on the island, because when the
plane crashes down it brings destruction and death
Chapter title- The Sound of the Shell- called everyone
together and brought power and order.
Setting- shaped like a boat and has coral reefs, has a
lagoon. The shape is ironic because the island is shaped
like a boat and they are stuck there in the ocean
Scar is the plane crash and it is a sign of human
corruption
The forest is mysterious, dark and dangerous while the
beach is bright and warm and fun
Conflict:
Jack wanted to be the leader but everyone voted for
Ralph and Jack got angry.
“I ought to be chief,” said Jack. Making him sound
arrogant. Roger spoke up and said “Let’s have a vote.”
Jack almost kills the pig. Piggy is getting shun by the rest
of them. Ralph has to maintain society.
Theme: Pig gives a food source. They elect a leader, and
explore land. How people have a craving for power.
