Ms. Esfandiari Heather.esfandiari@lcps.org Probability & Statistics 2014-2015 Text: Stats Modeling the World Policy Statement I) Goals for the course: A) To learn the content of Probability and Statistics The content of Probability and Statistics includes theory of probability, description of statistical measurements, probability distributions, and statistical inference. Optional topics include statistical inference involving two populations, linear regression, and correlation. B) To work cooperatively with other students in order to learn and help others to learn. The Program of Studies states: “Collaborative groups should be used to facilitate student communications of mathematics, to use the language and symbols of mathematics, to discuss problems and problem solving, and to develop confidence in their own ability to do mathematics.” C) To develop confidence in your mathematical skills and abilities and learn to enjoy mathematics. II) Grading Policy A) Evaluation 1) Homework: You will receive homework on a daily basis. These assignments will be a mixture of bookwork, continuations of classwork activities, and worksheets. You are expected to complete the assignment by the due date in order to earn full credit. You will be graded on both accuracy and completeness. 2) Labs/Activities: In class you will participate in many hands-on learning experiences. The write-ups for these activities will be worth up to 10 points. 3) Quizzes: Quizzes are administered occasionally and are worth up to 100 points. The purposes of quizzes are to check your progress throughout a unit and to get an indication of what is important as you study for a test. They may be individual, or paired. 4) Chapter/Unit Tests: Tests are administered at the end of a grouping of chapters or after the completion of a unit and are worth up to 200 points. They will include material from previous chapters in order to maintain a constant review process. 5) Final Exam: At the end of the semester, every student will take a final exam. 6) There will be other assignments and projects throughout the semester, generally long term. Each will be clearly stated on an assignment sheet with appropriate due dates and point values. B) Make-up Policy: Students are encouraged to check Vision for assignments on days of absences in order to prevent themselves from falling behind. Make-up work is the student’s responsibility. Students are allowed one class period to make up work missed for each absence. Students who check in late or out early are responsible for getting assignments. Assignments are listed on Vision. Make-up quizzes and tests can be made up in the math make-up room before school (8:058:50) on Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday or afterschool (3:55-4:40) on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday. The schedule will be posted outside of the classroom. III) Attendance and Supplies A) Attendance: Promptness and good attendance are mandatory. It is the student’s responsibility to get any work missed during an excused absence and work must be completed by the deadline. (Check Vision)!! B) Daily Needs: Textbook, paper, graph paper, graphing calculator (TI-84 or inspire), 3 ring binder (consider using dividers to stay organized) IV) Extra Help - Each morning from 8:15-8:50 Ms. Esfandiari will be available in L402. If I am not in this room please look in the math work room (L410) at the end of the hall when you arrive. - I am also available to stay after school if you set up an appointment with me. - Monday,Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings students from Mu Alpha Theta will offer math help in room L403 from 8:20-8:50. In order to be successful in this class, you will need to comply with the following: Complete homework assignments for understanding Complete assignments on time. Be aware of deadlines. Take good notes and ask questions. Bring notes and textbook to class everyday. Complete the test reviews for understanding. Use class time wisely.
