Today, we will explain why the Southern Colonies were
founded, describe the two ways of life that developed in the
Southern Colonies, and explain why slavery became
important in the South.
Prepare for pamphlet assignment (pick a partner and let me
know).
Tomorrow and the rest of the week we’ll be in room 106,
bring your materials.


Founded for religious purposes: A colony for
Catholics to escape persecution in England.
Act of Toleration 1649: Catholics had become
the religious minority in the colony, but still
had a lot of political power. This act was
passed to protect their religious freedom from
the increasing Protestant majority.



Representative government: House of
Burgesses
Major producer of cash crops tobacco
Bacon’s Rebellion 1676 (same year as
Metacom’s War): Frontier conflict between
settlers and Natives. The governor refused to
help the settlers in the conflict; Bacon led a
series of raids on Virginia (burned Jamestown
and Williamsburg).



The areas quickly grew apart
North: smaller tobacco fields (fewer slaves,
less wealth)
South: Large plantation similar to those of the
Caribbean (massive amounts of wealth)



Second chance colony for petty criminals and
debtors.
Excellent farming.
Considered a buffer between the more
important colonies and Spanish controlled
Florida.

