Founded for religious purposes: A colony for Catholics to escape persecution in England. Act of Toleration 1649: Catholics had become the religious minority in the colony, but still had a lot of political power. This act was passed to protect their religious freedom from the increasing Protestant majority. Representative government: House of Burgesses Major producer of cash crops tobacco Bacon’s Rebellion 1676 (same year as Metacom’s War): Frontier conflict between settlers and Natives. The governor refused to help the settlers in the conflict; Bacon led a series of raids on Virginia (burned Jamestown and Williamsburg). The areas quickly grew apart North: smaller tobacco fields (fewer slaves, less wealth) South: Large plantation similar to those of the Caribbean (massive amounts of wealth) Second chance colony for petty criminals and debtors.
