UNDERSTANDING GOALS (CONCEPTS):
Students will understand: Students will understand how different types of maps
are read. Students will understand what latitude and longitude are and how you
can find locations of maps using them. Students will understand the
demographics of North America and what countries make-up North America.
VOCABULARY: Map, North America, Geography,
Location, Latitude, Longitude
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What are the different types of
maps that people use to study the world? How can latitude and
longitude be used on maps to find specific locations? What
countries make up North America?
STUDENT OBJECTIVES (COMPETENCIES/OUTCOMES):
Students will be able to: SWBAT use a map to locate different
countries and regions in North America. SWBAT use latitude
and longitude to locate different coordinates on maps. SWBAT
list the different countries of North America.
STAGE II – ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
PERFORMANCE TASK: Students will be assessed on their
completion of the mapping projects. Participation will makeup 20% of the assessment. Summaries of the short reading
passages will also be counted towards their grades. Students
will research maps to locate places. Latitude and Longitude
will be used for group work activity.
