AP STUDIO ART Course Overview Teacher: Ms. Tomick Prerequisites: Art III, Art IV, or Portfolio Review Skills You Will Refine: Course Description: Problem Solving: AP Studio Art is an advanced studio class where you will learn to create meaningful pieces in order to build a portfolio of your best work through the study and application of the elements and principles of design. This course is designed as a rigorous college level course taught at the high school level. Studio Time: What are we going to do during class? The majority of your time will be studio time where you can work on developing your own portfolio. This time will also be broken up with in class critiques and discussions. Grading: Where and when are grades posted? All graded assignments will be posted online on Clarity. You can expect your grade to be posted one week after the assignment is collected. How will I be graded? You will be graded according to a six point grading scale similar to that of the used to assess the AP Portfolio. Grades are based on the following categories: Critiques: 25-100 points Sketchbook: 100 points Finished Projects: 100 points Portfolio Reviews: 100-300 points Assignments: What kind of projects will we be doing? You will be choosing your own concepts to explore for the year and can choose the media where you wish to refine your skills. You will also be responsible for keeping up with your portfolio and turning in a digital one at the end of the year as well as making a website. How will I be using my sketchbook? Your sketchbook is where you will paste all handouts, work on brainstorming, practice techniques, and complete bi-weekly drawing exercises. This is a place to experiment and develop your work. How much time do I have to devote outside of class? For AP Art you will be required to submit a portfolio of 24 artworks (if working 2D) or 14-20 artworks (if working 3D). In order to complete all of the work you will need to finish about one project a week and be willing to spend a MINIMUM of 5-10 hours a week outside of class. Copyright and Originality Students are expected to create their own, original artwork. When published photographs or the works of other artists are used, they should be in the service of a personal vision. Any published image should be altered in such a substantial way that it moves beyond duplication. You will be creating your own art challenges to find your own unique and creative solutions to develop a portfolio. Collaboration: You will work with your peers in groups, to challenge each other with ideas, and offer feedback on each other’s work. Creativity: You will continue to develop your ability to challenge your ideas and communicate them effectively. Critique Artwork: You will refine your ability to look at, analyze, and discuss your artwork, work of your peers, and art history. Technique: You will practice, experiment, and refine your skills in a media of your choice. Artist Voice: You will develop your own artistic style or voice and enhance your personal expression.
