Fractions Unit Test Test on: __________________ Students should study the following topics, using all notes, homework, and handouts, in order to be prepared for the test. 1. Parts of a set/region 2. Fractions on a number line 3. Estimating fractional parts 4. Equivalent fractions 5. Greatest Common Factor (GCF) 6. Simplest Form (reducing fractions) 7. Comparing and ordering fractions 8. Changing an improper fraction to a mixed number 9. Changing mixed number into an improper fraction 10.Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators 11.Least common multiple (LCM) and least common denominator (LCD) 12.Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators Equivalent Fractions 1. Cross multiply. 2. If the numbers are the same, then the fractions are equivalent. Factors (GCF) 1. Make a T-chart. 2. Find the factors for the two numbers. 3. The GCF is the largest number they have in common. Simplest Form 1. Find the GCF by using a T-chart. 2. Find the factor that is the greatest that they both have in common (GCF). 3. Divide the numerator and the denominator by the GCF. Compare/Order Fractions 1. Cross multiply. 2. The fraction that has the largest number is the larger fraction. Improper fraction > mixed number 1. Divide the numerator by the denominator 2. The quotient is the whole number 3. The remainder is the numerator 4. The denominator stays the same Mixed Number > improper fraction 1. Multiply the denominator by the whole number 2. Add the numerator 3. The denominator stays the same Adding/subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators 1. If the denominators are the same, then add (or subtract) the numerators only. 2. Simplify (or find the mixed number), if possible Multiples (LCM) 1. Make a T-chart. 2. Find the multiples of the two numbers. 3. The LCM is the smallest number they have in common. Adding/subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators 1. Find the LCM. 2. The LCM is the new denominator. 3. Figure out what number you have to multiply the old denominator by to get the new denominator. 4. Multiply the same number by the numerator. 5. Add or subtract 6. Simplify (or find the mixed number), if possible
