ANCIENT MALI – Ancient Mali is located in West Africa with the Sahara Desert to the north and the Niger River in the south. Physical characteristics (the land) of Mali include: Deserts in the north (Salt mines were found there) and Sahel plains in the south (Gold mines were found there). Salt and gold are natural resources. Griots and miners are human resources. Boats and tools are capital resources. Mud was used to build houses, temples and even to dye clothing. C. Human characteristics (the people) of Mali include: The people of Ancient Mali traded salt for gold, Griots were storytellers who passed down the country’s oral history. Mali was ruled by kings such as Sundiata (the Lion King of Mali, the first king of Mali) Mansa Musa spread Mali’s wealth on his hajj to Mecca).
