Service: The pillar of service can be reached in a variety of ways. The
willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation
or recognition of any kind is a quality that is essential in NHS members.
As a service club, the National Honor Society is highly concerned with
giving its all to the school and community at large.
What is service?
 Tutoring, coaching, mentoring or providing lessons for other students – at
any time – with no financial compensation
 Participating in any of the activities listed on the NHS volunteer
opportunities link
 Babysitting for a school or civic organization without any financial
compensation
 Participation in any religious, civic, community, or non-profit organization’s
activity that offers goods or services to members of the community at no
charge
 PEER, SCA, and office helpers – 25 hours maximum per school year
 Performance groups – church or school musical or drama – hours spent
outside of the normal meeting time while performing for the community at
no cost
What isn’t service?
 Babysitting or tutoring for a fee or other perk
 Participation in any school, religious, civic, community, or non-profit
organization’s activity that is expected or required for membership in said
organization
 Performance groups – church or school musical or drama – hours spent in
practices, rehearsals, religious accompaniment, or one where the group is
financially compensated or expected to be present
