Evaluation of Service Learning in Immunology (BIO 5415)
Spring 2016
“CHEEK WEEK” will be March 14-18 culminating in a Bone Marrow Registration Drive on
Friday 2/18.
WHAT”S THE RATIONALE FOR THIS PROJECT?
Our project is to increase awareness of the Mississippi Bone Marrow Donation Registry and to
host a registration drive via the Mississippi Bone Donor Program at the University of Mississippi
Medical Center in association with “Be the Match”, the National Bone Marrow Registry. This
project fulfills the values and mission of Mississippi College to “use our gifts, talents, and abilities
to advance the genuine well-being of our community” and to live a life in service to others. Bone
marrow transplants are the “therapy of last resort” for many conditions including, but not limited,
to sickle cell disease, various forms of cancers (e.g. leukemia), metabolic disorders, and clotting
disorders. If clinicians have accessed the National Bone Marrow Registry then the patient’s family
members are not compatible (not acceptable “matches”). A “match” for unrelated persons can be
difficult to locate as a “needle in a haystack”. The most sought after demographic of donors is
between the ages of 18 and 44, because it increases the success of the procedure. Thus, Mississippi
College is an ideal place to host a registration drive.
HOW DOES THIS HELP ME LEARN?
“Service Learning” is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with
curriculum-based learning. This opportunity will allow you to improve your academic skills by
applying what you are learning in class to the real world. There is a plethora of strong evidence
that this approach enables a deeper understanding of the content of a course. I am happy to discuss
this more with you if you are interested.
WHAT ARE THE LEARNING GOALS?
By the end of this experience you will be able to:






Discuss the organization of the bone marrow, hematopoiesis, and bone marrowderived stem cells, isolation of stem cell populations from the marrow.
Explain the process of bone marrow donation.
Discuss some of the therapeutic uses of bone marrow transplants.
Explain the transplant process.
Explain how the bone marrow registry works.
Explain the benefits and risks of donation.

General Knowledge
A quiz will be given in class on Friday, February 10th. This quiz must be completed in the time
allotted to earn credit for the exercise.
Participation
Students are responsible for discussing the Bone Marrow Drive and Donation with at least 5 people
on or before the day of the drive, donate an hour of their time on the day of the drive and assist
with the execution of the drive. To earn credit for this exercise, the person that you speak to must
sign, date, provide contact information and evaluate your knowledge, professionalism and
enthusiasm. In the event that they will not fill this in for you, ask someone else.

Evaluation of Service Learning in Immunology (BIO 5415)
Spring 2016
WHAT IF I DON”T WANT TO DO THIS?
If you choose not to be involved in this service project, it is OK. For this portion of your grade
you will. You will write at 15 page paper (references not included) on bone marrow
transplantation, careful to discuss the process, medical conditions helped, and the types of cells
that are obtained from the procedure. An annotated bibliography, with at least 5 sources you will
cite in your paper, in CSE format, will be due at least 1 week before the midterm grades are due.
Your evaluation for this part of your grade will be based in the following:

Annotated Bibliography
An annotated bibliography is an organized list of sources with an accompanying paragraph
(or annotation) that describes, explains, and/or evaluates each entry in terms of quality,
authority, and relevance. In other words, it is an organized way to take notes!!! In this course,
all references and citations should be in the CBE/CSE format. Details can be found at
http://tim.thorpeallen.net/Courses/Reference/Citations.html.


A coversheet with the following: YOUR NAME, DATE, SECTION, TITLE
at least 5 credible, relevant and appropriate references
single spaced
1 inch margins in all directions
Cambria font, 12 pt.
submitted electronically via MOODLE with the file name in this format
(Student name_AB_S2016)
Content Guidelines
You are required to use for this assignment. Each entry should contain the following:
1. THE REFERENCE-The reference in CBE format.
Evaluation of Service Learning in Immunology (BIO 5415)
Spring 2016
2. THE ANNOTATION-A short (~150-200 words) paragraph in which you
address the following:
a. The main idea of the article
b. How the authors came to their conclusions. (In other words, what
methods did they use?)
c. The article's thesis, conclusions, and/or recommendations.
d. Identify, for the reader, how the article is relevant to your
research/hypothesis/proposal.
3. THE EVALUATION-make a statement about the type of source (e.g., a scholarly
research article, an editorial from a professional magazine, a feature
newspaper article, a chapter from a popular book, a U.S. government website
of the author to write about the topic, quality of the source, objectivity, etc.)
FOR EXAMPLE
Smith, M.A., & Murray, R.A. (2003). Students that pay attention earn higher grades. Life Sciences Education 29:

This scientific article asserts that students that pay attention in class have a higher retention rate and
more academic success than those that are on facebook© Twitter© and Snapchat© during class.
The scientists surveyed 150 sophomores and seniors at Mississippi College regarding their off-task
use of internet in class and then correlated it with their grades on each of 4 exams and their final
grade for the class. The authors suggest that while internet use in class may be helpful to on-task
students, the academic risk posed to disengaged students warrants careful consideration prior to
allowing the use of electronic devices in class. The authors did not survey the on-task students in
this study however the study supports the findings of others and is directly related to my paper
because it discusses the use of social media in academic environments. (This paper is peer-reviewed
and highly cited, with over 350 citations since its publication in 2003).

Don't confuse abstracts or summaries with annotations. Abstracts are the
purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly
journal articles or in periodical indexes. Annotations are descriptive and
critical; they expose the author's point of view, clarity, appropriateness
and/or authority.
The Paper: DUE April 8, 2016
The same technical guidelines are required as stated for the annotate bibliography. The details of
the grading of the grading of the paper can be found in the rubric that follows.
