TODAY’S OBJECTIVES:
Students will examine how the author’s purpose affects
his/her use of language and choice of form.
AGENDA:
1. Complete grammar warmup #22.
2. Watch excerpts from two documentaries that present two
sides of the same battle. Write at least one paragraph (4-6
sentences) comparing the two news clips.
 Which news clip is anti-war? Pro-war?
 Which news clip is presenting the truth?
 How do you know? Justify your answer with
examples.
 What motives would the media have to distort the
truth?
3. Review media perception of war in Iraq (photo and news
clip).
4. Watch PBS Documentary Bloods in ‘Nam. What rhetorical
devices (ethos, pathos, logos) does the director use to
make his story compelling?
5. Compare lyrics from songs from the Vietnam War era to
songs from the Iraqi/Afghanistan war era. Any
similarities/differences? What purpose does music/lyrics
serve in times of war?
