Department Introduction:
Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance
of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety
systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution
systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance
response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam,
emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus.
Job Purpose:
Lead skilled plumbers performing journey-level work to alter, repair, and maintain piping systems in campus buildings,
facilities and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Perform all duties of the trade, including inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining and testing utility
plumbing systems
 Plan, estimate, schedule, lead and assign journey-level personnel and semiskilled workers in the performance of
work
 Develop cost estimates of repairs and maintenance or alterations projects
 Utilizing available computer applications, plan and prepare work assignments, maintain records on work
performed, write reports as required and contribute to improving communications throughout the Department
 Monitor maintenance work as well as “Shop Direct” or “Managed” alterations jobs
 Resolve problems; alert supervisor of problems that require client contact
 Develop solutions for repair and maintenance problems
 Cut, fit, fabricate, and assemble a wide variety of articles, materials and devices, including steel, stainless steel,
copper, brass, ductile iron, plastic, cast iron, corrosion-resistant pipe, tile, concrete and transite
 Install fittings, hangers, anchors and guides
 Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and sketches; construct, lay out or plan piping assemblies with respect to
walls, structures and other obstructions, allowing for expansion and contraction and alignment in accordance with
pipefitting practice
 Obtain plumbing permits as required
 Coordinate and meet with officials as necessary to conduct inspections
 Inspect projects to ensure compliance with local standards and codes
 Assist in employee interviews and make hiring recommendations; provide information for employee performance
reviews to supervisor/manager
 Communicate with Facilities Services’ shops, project managers and Engineering Services to facilitate work
 Know and ensure that assigned personnel comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to
work actions and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of
personal protective equipment whenever required; report safety infractions to the shop supervisor or manager
 Follow and enforce adherence to all University and Facilities Services’ policies and procedures
 Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, with
particular attention to excellent customer service
 Attend all required meetings and trainings
 Meet all requirements, including continuing education hours to renew and maintain necessary license/certification
 May assist in development of departmental budget
 Order materials and supplies as required, utilizing appropriate processes
 Maintain vehicle and tools as required
 Perform other duties as assigned
 Regular and predictable attendance is required

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 One-year, full-time experience as a journey plumber/pipefitter/steamfitter or equivalent trade skill
 Valid driver’s license recognized by the State of Washington
 Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal
requirements, such as a license/certification/registration
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Demonstrated successful experience as a lead or supervisor
 Demonstrated ability to take direction, work well with others and as a member of a team, and in providing
excellent customer services
 Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
 Demonstrated successful experience in computer technology and computerized maintenance management
systems
 Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act) and OSHA
(Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations
 Seattle Fire Department Confidence Testing Certification AS-1
 Medical Gas Certification
 Pipe Welding Certification and/or demonstrated experience welding pipes
 Experience in plumbing maintenance of institutional, industrial and/or commercial environments
 Washington State Department of Labor & Industries Journey-level Plumber Certification
 Aquatics Facilities Operators Certification
 Washington State Department of Health Backflow Assembly Tester Certification
 Experience in steam distribution/heat exchangers and closed loop piping systems in an institutional, industrial or
commercial environment
Conditions of Employment:
 May be required to accept variable work shift
 Must be able to work in a nonsmoking environment
 Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
 Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job
 Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions
 Ability to lift and move heavy material is required
 Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety procedures
 A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas and in the Medical Center
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
