Facilities Maintenance & Construction
Maintenance Mechanic 1
Job Code: 8814 – Contract Classified
Department Introduction:
Facilities Maintenance and Facilities Construction are responsible for general maintenance, repair, alterations, and
renovations of all campus facilities including building interiors, exteriors, and grounds.
Job Purpose:
Assist journey-level trade’s workers in performance of maintenance and alterations work assignments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Assist in the maintenance, operation and repair of electrical, mechanical and structural systems of buildings,
grounds, and utility distribution
 Assist journey-level trades workers by performing duties related to carpentry, painting, plastering, plumbing,
steamfitting, mechanical or electrical work, refrigeration maintenance, or machinists trades, etc.
 Assist in the fabrication of equipment and materials constructed in trades shops in accordance with project
requirements
 Operate and repair a variety of power tools and equipment; operate automotive equipment to transport materials
and supplies
 Load and unload trucks, move equipment, furniture, supplies and materials
 Know and comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the
job, including Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment
whenever required
 Interact with clients, coworkers, management, staff and students in a courteous and professional manner, with
particular attention to excellent customer service
 Follow all University and Facilities Services’ policies and procedures
 May assist in material storage, record keeping and organizing shop inventories
 Attend all required meetings and trainings
 May attend technical training courses
 Perform other duties as assigned
 Regular and predictable attendance is required

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 High school graduation or GED equivalent; OR, six month's full-time related vocational study or training; OR, six
months' applicable work experience; AND, one year's full-time experience as a helper in building and equipment
maintenance, construction, repair work, or equivalent
 Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal
requirements, such as a license/certification/registration
 Possession of a valid Washington state motor vehicle operator's license is required
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required

Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Demonstrated ability to take direction, work well with others and as a member of a team, and in providing
excellent customer services
 Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
 Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA
(Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations
 Experience in alterations work, such as carpentry, laying floors, masonry, machinery, painting, sheet metal and
welding; assisting journey-level trades workers in campus alterations projects using hand and/or power tools to
remove and install new flooring; pulling wire and helping plumbers install pipe; sanding and preparing projects for
painting; grinding, welding, buffing and polishing materials; using solvent tanks, sandblasters and steam cleaners
and/or power brushes to clean equipment and material prior to painting, repairing and/or welding; operating shop
equipment such as hand trucks and forklifts, cut-off saws, grinders, jumps shear, hand-operated brakes, power
saws, and band saws, among others; and performing simple fabrication of diverse shapes
Conditions of Employment:
 Valid driver’s license recognized by the state of Washington
 May be required to accept variable work shift
 Must be able to work in a smoke-free environment
 Approved footwear must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
 Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job
 Ability to lift and move heavy material is required
 Work may require access to confined spaces and heights using approved safety procedures
 Must be able to work outside under all weather conditions
 A tuberculosis (TB) test is required for work assignments in nonhuman primate areas and in the UW Medical
Center
 Regular and predictable attendance is required
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
