Media Maintenance Technician 2 (Tower)

Department Introduction:
Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance
of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety
systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution
systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance
response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam,
emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus
Job Purpose:
The University of Washington’s newest acquisition, the UW Tower a 22 story 510,000 square foot high-rise located in the
U-District is seeking a dynamic team player to join the UW Facilities Services team. The complex is home to over 50
departments - 1,700 employees and a beehive of activity. The facility includes 20 conference rooms, cafeteria and an
auditorium which host a wide variety of events and meetings.
UW Tower hosts a variety of events, including graduation ceremonies, alumni reunions, new staff orientations, student
celebrations, faculty workshops, business seminars, brown bag informational seminars and department meetings. The
UW Tower has an additional 30 dedicated conference rooms for department use co-located on their respective floors.
The rapid changes in technology leads to continuous upgrades on media equipment throughout the facility—collaboration
with department management on recommendations for equipment purchases, system design, facility utilization,
installation and maintenance schedule is ongoing. Multi-tasking is the norm not the exception.
Perform journey-level media maintenance work and deliver audio visual set-up and support for events hosted within the
facility, working with high level management, faculty, students and staff
Duties and Responsibilities:
Media Maintenance and Installation
 Assemble, install and update media equipment and systems as such audio-visual control systems in auditoriums;
closed circuit TV, public address, or antenna cable systems
 Provide work direction and/or coordinate the activities of equipment operators and other department personnel in
the construction, installation and maintenance of UW Tower media and A/V systems
 Use electronic test equipment to troubleshoot malfunction(s) to system, board, or component level using
diagnostic software as needed; Use hand and power tools such as drill presses, lathes, soldering guns, grinders,
etc.
 Perform mechanical or electronic repair(s) to system, board, or component level; calibrate and/or test for proper
operation
 Perform preventive maintenance on media equipment; clean, repair, adjust, and calibrate
 Maintains supply inventory including equipment parts and other supplies and orders according to established
departmental procedures
 Maintain service manuals and records
Audio/Visual Support
 Schedule and arrange use of audiovisual equipment for UW Tower tenants upon request; coordinate reservation
schedule including type of equipment, time needed and time scheduled to return
 Set up media equipment for special events; may assist with studio booth operation
 Occasionally works with high profile clients, such as University President, Board of Regents, executives, or
visiting dignitaries
 Frequently works with UW Tower tenants or guests, including faculty, staff, and students staff on computer, audio
and video system interfacing
 Troubleshoot equipment problems under time pressure, fulfilling service/event requirements
 Check outgoing and incoming equipment for damage or malfunctions

Provide work direction and/or coordinate the activities of equipment operators and other department personnel in
operation of audio-visual equipment / event support
May perform limited maintenance and repair on computers
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 One year of experience as a Media Maintenance Technician I OR Three years of experience as media
maintenance technician OR equivalent education/experience
 Effective oral and written communications skills and demonstrated effective client relations skills
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Experience using a computerized work order system
 Experience providing excellent service to and collaboration with customers with diverse needs
 Experience working in an urban high rise building
 Ability to work directly with high level clients such as staff for the Board of Regents, Office of the President, and
senior level management
Conditions of Employment:
 Must be able to work in a nonsmoking environment
 Position requires a flexible work schedule, including weekend and evening work
 Ability to climbing vertical ladders and work at heights
