FACILITIES SERVICES Job Description Campus Engineering & Operations Elevator Mechanic Job Code: 8836 – Contract Classified Department Introduction: Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam, emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus. Job Purpose: Perform journey-level work maintaining, servicing troubleshooting, and repairing hydraulic elevators, cable elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, wheelchair lifts, residence elevators, other conveyances, and hoisting equipment. Perform maintenance and service for a conveyance route containing hydraulic elevators, cable elevators, escalators, wheelchair lifts, residence elevators, dumbwaiters and other conveyances and hoisting equipment. Duties and Responsibilities: Repair or replace conveyance parts, including motors, door mechanisms, electrical components, and a variety of other electrical and mechanical components used in our elevator or conveyance system Perform repair work on conveyance equipment of various vintages and manufacturers, including modern computerized equipment Adjust conveyances for proper operation Responsible for reliable maintenance and operation of assigned group of conveyance equipment Respond to trouble calls on all campus conveyances as required Perform annual and quarterly inspections and tests of elevators, escalators, wheelchair lifts, dumbwaiters, and other conveyances required by Labor and Industries tests Responsible for properly completing Washington State documentation requirements for conveyance equipment, including elevator/escalator log sheets Interpret National Elevator Codes and WAC Chapter 296-96 regulations for all elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, and other conveyances Ability to prioritize multiple work tasks efficiently Troubleshoot and repair problems with conveyances Read and interpret conveyance schematics in order to troubleshoot problems Inspect contractors’ work to see that work is performed to campus specifications Communicate with campus clientele and building occupants regarding status of elevator problems/repairs Identify and order conveyance parts as required Perform material handling, rigging, and hoisting, etc. Operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment With proper personal protective equipment, work in animal research areas Perform other duties as assigned Regular and predictable attendance is required Core Competencies: Demonstrate personal integrity and trustworthiness Manage stressful situations and changing priorities effectively Anticipate, recognize and resolve problems Be responsible and accountable Use organizational skills and provide attention to details Maintain a positive, optimistic and success-oriented attitude Exercise professional demeanor, which includes being tactful and courteous Exhibit a professional work ethic 04/07/14 Page 1 of 2 Continuously promote a safe work environment Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an elevator mechanic; OR full journey status as an elevator mechanic in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license is required Required to have a class 01 or class 08 Elevator Mechanic License per WAC 296-96-00910 License must be valid and not expired The elevator mechanic will be required to maintain a valid license for employment Ability to communicate appropriately with clients, students, and staff Must be a strong team player and must be able to work independently and as a team member Must be able to respond to system emergencies during regular business hours and outside regular business hours Must present a professional image of the elevator shop Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Education credits in the applicable license category (WAC 296-96-000910) Have worked independently as an elevator mechanic for an elevator contractor licensed to do business in this state or as an employee of a public agency Have obtained a certificate of completion of an elevator mechanic’s apprenticeship program Five or more years of experience as a service mechanic Experience with a wide variety of elevators Conditions of Employment: Pass an examination administered by Labor & Industries on Chapter 70.87 RCW and WAC 296-96 elevators Must be able to work in a diverse workforce Approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment Must attend an approved Labor & Industries elevator continuing education course and receive a certificate of completion for the course The course must consist of not less than eight hours This course must be attended and completed within one year immediately preceding any Elevator Mechanic license renewal The position requires working with asbestos containing equipment, following proper procedures The position requires the wearing of personal protective equipment appropriate to the job task A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire 04/07/14 Page 2 of 2
