Campus Engineering & Operations
Electrician
Job Code: 8834 – Contract Classified
Department Introduction:
Campus Engineering provides professional engineering support for the design, construction, operation and maintenance
of all University facilities. Campus Operations maintains and operates critical building systems including fire/life safety
systems, elevator systems, building environmental systems and controls, central clock systems, high voltage distribution
systems, and a utility shutdown coordination program. Campus Operations also provides emergency maintenance
response service to the Seattle campus community, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Utilities produces steam,
emergency electrical power, chilled water, and compressed air for the campus.
Job Purpose:
Perform journey-level electrical work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and alteration of the University of Washington
Power Plant.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Alter, maintain, repair, or install wiring, cables, rigid conduit, switches, controls, breaker panels, instrument
panels, distribution panels, buzzer and bell circuits, power circuits, sound powered phone circuits, and other
related electrical components
 Troubleshoot and solve operational and maintenance problems with malfunctioning electrical equipment and
controls
 Modify, adjust, maintain, repair, or install electric motors, electrical equipment, motor controllers, light fixtures,
power outlets, electrical meters, timers, fans, and electrical equipment systems
 Provide support to the power plant machinery mechanics, control technicians, operating engineers and other
trades in the operation and maintenance of the power plant
 Prepare equipment to be worked on by other trades to ensure worker safety by utilizing lockout/tagout
procedures, electrical safety procedures, and the power tool safety program
 Coordinate and work with high voltage electricians on specific power plant equipment
 Order materials and components needed to perform electrical work in the facility
 Install new electrical equipment as specified in blueprints and specifications
 Work with design engineers and consultants to offer a plant perspective on methods of work pertaining to
installation of electrical equipment and other systems in the facility
 Follow safe work and housekeeping practices, comply with departmental and university policies, and comply with
environmental and other regulations while performing duties
 May lead and instruct helpers as required
 Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an electrician; OR full journey status as an electrician in a union;
OR four years' applicable work experience\
 Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required
Must be available for call-backs outside normal working hours in order to respond to operational problems
Must be a strong team player not only able to work alone but able to work closely with multiple trades in a highly
complex steam and power generation facility
Must be able to communicate well with power plant employees and supervisory staff to ensure safe, reliable, and
continuous operation of the plant
Must be able to effectively perform work in a critical, continuously operating facility without causing service
interruptions
Must be able to install galvanized-rigid-steel conduit systems
Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Washington State Electrician’s License
 The candidate needs to be able to organize and plan their work schedule taking into account the operational
needs of the facility and the other trades
 Five years of experience as an electrician in a power plant facility or other heavy industrial facility
 Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical equipment found in power plant facilities
 Full journeyman status as an electrician
Conditions of Employment:
 Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
 Approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job
 Applicants are required to have state certification or have successfully completed a recognized apprenticeship
program, and show proof of their certification or completion as part of the application process
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
