Program Coordinator

Department Introduction:
Building Services delivers Custodial Services to the UW campus that provides exceptionally clean and sanitary
environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the comprehensive Recycling & Solid Waste
Management program.
Job Purpose:
Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Recycling & Solid Waste, this position coordinates and performs work
specific to implementing campus-wide waste diversion programs and conducting ongoing education, training and outreach
for the two operational units of Building Services - Recycling & Solid Waste and Custodial Services.
Serve as project coordinator for the MiniMax program, a campus-wide recycling and solid waste program on the main UW
campus. Work closely with Recycling & Solid Waste and Custodial Services staff regarding all phases of implementation
of the program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Assemble, label, and prepare recycling and waste containers for installation, and assist in distribution and
placement of collection containers at each participating building
 Resolve inquiries and complaints regarding the program and its implementation
 Conduct “building-to-building” education and outreach to promote the MiniMax program and overall campus waste
diversion efforts
 Advise UW faculty, staff, students, and the general public regarding the policies and procedures for MiniMax and
other recycling and waste collection services or programs
 Participate in site visits, create email and written communication for distribution to building occupants, and
develop detailed installation plans
 Publicize, coordinate, and conduct ongoing training sessions and outreach activities to promote MiniMax or other
recycling and waste collection services or programs
 Develop and distribute promotional and educational material as needed to continue to support the program
 Prepare committee briefings, newsletter articles, outreach activities, and presentations for meetings
 Conduct a systems analysis on effectiveness of program and its impact on overall waste diversion efforts and
redirection of custodial hours
 Identify efficiencies and needed areas of improvement
 Provide administrative support for tracking APPA and Breeze data to ensure all information is updated and in
alignment with changes made in each building as a result of MiniMax
 This will ensure work assignments are scheduled appropriately and APPA levels are maintained
 Update other data systems as required including equipment inventory records and the master MiniMax building
list; perform physical inventories as required
 Prepare quantitative reports as needed such as program cost analysis, food waste diversion, cost savings, and
redirection of hours
 Develop, recommend, and assist Recycling & Solid Waste and Custodial Services staff in promoting and
implementing additional campus-wide waste diversion programs
 Develop and maintain Balanced Scorecard strategic objectives that are in alignment with the direction of the
department
 Participate in natural work group activities and other Lean initiatives
 Assist in the coordination and participation of annual programs and events, including Trash-In, Earth Day,
SCRAM, Recycle Mania, Husky Neighborhood Clean Up, Sustainability Summit and Husky Football Blue Bag
Recycling Program
 Provide general administrative and customer service support to Building Services staff as required including,
fielding customer inquiries, coordinating site visits, conducting presentations, processing work orders and
scheduling UW-provided or vendor-collected service

Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 High school graduation or equivalent AND two years of experience in the recycling & solid waste industry OR
equivalent education/experience
 Excellent oral and written communications skills
 Excellent customer service skills
 Experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Experience in recycling or related field (e.g. solid waste management, waste prevention, etc.)
 Experience working in governmental, higher education, or large corporation recycling programs
 Experience coordinating special event recycling programs
 Experience researching special materials reuse and recycling options
Conditions of Employment:
 Valid Washington State Driver’s License
 Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
