FACILITIES SERVICES Job Description Building Services Equipment Technician 4 Job Code: 5311 – Contract Classified Equipment Technician Lead Department Introduction: Building Services delivers Custodial Services to the UW campus that provides exceptionally clean and sanitary environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the comprehensive Recycling & Solid Waste Management program. Job Purpose: This is the senior, specialist, or lead worker level of the series. Lead mechanic in an equipment and repair shop, leads other lower level staff, inspects, diagnoses and makes major and minor mechanical repairs of all types of heavy and/or industrial/commercial equipment. Work is typically reviewed on a spot check basis after decisions have been made. Unusual problems that may occur are brought to a higher level supervisor with probable outcomes and solutions. Regularly assigns, instructs and checks the work of others. May supervise and train custodian, and other staff. Duties and Responsibilities: Ensures that safe workplace requirements are met and acceptable housekeeping standards are maintained Maintains/updates computerized equipment records Operates a specially equipped mechanic's truck out of a division or district shop and makes standard mechanical repairs and adjustments or improvises emergency repairs, including welding, in the field to all types of highway equipment and mechanical plant facilities Leads, instructs, and participates in the inspection, diagnosis and making repairs to such mechanical equipment as passenger vehicles, power shovels, graders, dozers, heavy trucks and accessories, snow blowers, loaders, rollers, catch basin cleaners and all other state-owned equipment used in highway maintenance and construction Answers emergency call backs 24 hours a day Operates computer test equipment such as lab scope and scanners to diagnose and repair computer controlled systems and on-board electronics Inspects and/or road tests vehicle after completion of repairs Provides oral input to equipment supervisors for the purpose of evaluating the work performance of shop personnel Handles storage and disposal of TEF generated hazardous waste Uses a computer to update and maintain shop records Performs other related mechanical work as required May supervise lower level staff Perform other duties as assigned Regular and predictable attendance is required Core Competencies: Demonstrate personal integrity and trustworthiness Manage stressful situations and changing priorities effectively Anticipate, recognize and resolve problems Be responsible and accountable Use organizational skills and provide attention to details Maintain a positive, optimistic and success-oriented attitude Exercise professional demeanor, which includes being tactful and courteous Exhibit a professional work ethic Continuously promote a safe work environment 07/01/07 Page 1 of 2 Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge: High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate and two years of experience as a journey-level mechanic repairing heavy duty or commercial/industrial equipment A valid driver's license is required Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge: Some positions require three years of experience in appliance repair or related mechanical work Trade or technical school training in appliance or related repair work may be substituted year-for-year for up to two years of the work experience Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration Conditions of Employment: A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire 07/01/07 Page 2 of 2
