Custodian Lead, Recycling & Solid Waste HSB
Department Introduction:
Building Services delivers Custodial Services to the UW campus that provides exceptionally clean and sanitary
environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the comprehensive Recycling & Solid Waste
Management program.
Job Purpose:
Provide lead oversight to Recycling & Solid Waste Recycling Custodians (Green Team) assigned to Health Science
Building (HSB). This includes assisting staff in performing job tasks; providing training on equipment and collection routes;
scheduling daily staff duties; overseeing temporary staff filling-in during absences. Regularly assign, instruct, and check
work of recycling custodial staff in recycling material collection and cleaning functions. Perform duties of Recycling
Custodian. Perform setup, monitor, and cleanup of recycling and waste special event recycling containers on the main
campus. Clean litter containers, food waste containers, and other recycling and waste collection containers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Regularly assign, instruct, schedule, and monitor work assignments for Recycling Custodians assigned to the
Health Sciences Building
 Check collections sites daily to ensure collection of full or partially full recycling paper toters on each floor are
emptied on schedule
 Check hallways and other designated cardboard collection area’s to ensure collection of cardboard is on schedule
 Monitor upper loading docks to ensure that docks are clean, sweep, and cleanliness is maintained
 Monitor area’s in front of loading docks and area’s surrounding recycling and garbage containers (including
compactors) to ensure that these areas are clean, sweep, and cleanliness is maintained
 Monitor designated outdoor food courts and outdoor litter/recycling (smart cans) to ensure areas are clean and
smart cans are serviced
 Respond to overflowing litter, recycling, and waste containers
 Lead recycling custodial staff in recycling material collection and custodial cleaning functions
 Train collection functions, cleaning techniques, and safe cleaning & material handling practices
 Distribute custodial equipment and supplies; monitor the use and care of assigned equipment and supplies
 Monitor and respond to the disposal of construction materials, wood pallets, plastic film, surplus property, and
abandoned property on the Health Sciences Building loading docks
 Transport and/or arrange for collection of construction materials, wood pallets, plastic film, abandon property to
Bryant yard recycling containers or other designated disposal sites
 On a daily basis, responsible for monitoring staff work scheduled reporting and ending times
 Provide daily transportation for recycling custodial staff to and from work site
 Perform setup, monitor, and cleanup of recycling and waste special event recycling containers on the main
campus
 Clean litter containers, food waste containers, and other recycling and waste collection containers
 Respond to:
o General requests for program or operational information
o Requests for information/action from other Facilities Services units
o Complaints from customers and building occupants
o Urgent solid waste and recycling operational issues
 Monitor safety practices of custodial employees
 Assist in responding to safety incidents
 Participate in incident investigations and operational emergencies
 Provide coverage for operational continuity which includes coverage for other leads
 Perform related duties as required; assume higher level duties as Transportation Supervisor in his/her absence
 Be proficient in use of in house database program (WHEELS)
 Perform the duties of Recycling Custodian

Required Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Physical ability to do required work AND one year of experience as a Custodian, or equivalent OR equivalent
education/experience
 Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies
 Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
 Must be able to follow written and/or verbal instructions and communicate in English regarding the use of
chemicals, supplies, and equipment; comply with safety policies and procedures
Desirable Skills, Experience and Knowledge:
 Lead experience and three years of custodial experience
Conditions of Employment:
 A valid driver’s license recognized by the State of Washington is required
 Substantial footwear is required and must be provided by the employee
 Lifting, pushing, or pulling 0-50 lbs. frequently; 51-75 lbs. occasionally -with assistance; 76-100 + lbs. rarely - with
assistance
 Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
 A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire
