Welcome – President Janet Dudley-Eshbach o President Dudley-Eshbach welcomed her new Assistant, Amy Hasson, and her new Assistant for Government and Community Relations, Roz

Hamlett.

2.

Campus Updates – President Janet Dudley-Eshbach o Construction of the TETC is running ahead of schedule and is on budget. o During summer 2007, the athletic fields saw some improvements, with the installation of lights and artificial turf. o Construction will begin on the parking garage next May. o Plans are under way for the new Perdue School of Business to be

“green,” in accordance with campus goals of addressing climate change in our buildings and operations. o The President expressed a need for a new learning center/library, fine performing arts center, fitness center, and more modern residence halls. o SU will soon need to update its strategic plan. o Institutional goals and priorities for the 2007-2008 academic year were distributed (document attached).

Enrollment Management – Jane Dané o Fall 2007 enrollment report highlights: i.

6,601 freshmen applications received, an 11.6% increase over fall

2006. ii.

The 220 SAT test-optional students admitted have an average

GPA of 3.71; the average overall high school GPA of new freshman was 3.50. iii.

Minority transfer students increased to 21.3%. iv.

The total number of Full-Time Equivalent students (FTES) is now

7,581.

Welcome Week Updates – Ellen Neufeldt o Welcome Week was a success! Dr. Neufeldt received much positive feedback from students, faculty, staff, and parents.

University Governance: o Student Government Association – Matthew Ng i.

The Student Government Association has recently put together a

Freshmen Committee, which offers leadership opportunities to freshmen. ii.

The Student Government Association is attempting to inform students of the recently passed Salisbury City noise ordinance. iii.

The Sammy the Sea Gull statue will be unveiled at Fun Day on

September 15, 2007. The statue will be placed in the Henson triangle in front of Maggs Gym. iv.

Planning for Homecoming 2007 is well underway. o Faculty Senate – Elizabeth Curtin i.

The Faculty Senate is working on incentives to get faculty more involved in Faculty Senate subcommittees. ii.

Open meetings of the Faculty Senate will be held the second and fourth Tuesday of every month in Room 119 of Holloway Hall. o Staff Senate – Lisa Gray i.

The Staff Senate has a full executive committee this year. ii.

End of the year reports will be completed soon. o University Forum - Steven Hetzler i.

The University Forum’s executive committee has made improving communication with the University a top priority.

Advancement Activities – Rosemary Thomas o Fun Day: September 15.

o Family Weekend: September 28-30.

o Sea Gull Century: October 6.

o Homecoming: 18-21.

Goals and Priorities for 2007-08 Academic Year

Double the # of donors and amount of giving to Maryland Charities Campaign

Make progress on Campaign 2012 goals and fundraising targets (e.g., grow donor base)

Develop strategy to improve already high retention and graduation rates (and eliminate the achievement gap)

Implement comprehensive enrollment and marketing plan

Incorporate concerns relating to climate change into our operations

Develop strategies to prepare more students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) areas

Complete 80% of work to update the campus Master Plan

Continue timely progress on capital projects

Develop and implement an effective legislative/gubernatorial strategy

Establish a new Strategic Planning and Budget Commission (re-examine SU’s performance and aspirational peers, set plan for 2008-2013, solidify institutional identity or “brand,” other)

Complete campus security upgrades

Promote on-going and new diversity initiatives; raise SU’s MBE participation rate

Request enhancement funding for faculty recruitment/retention

Build upon the recent, extremely effective efforts to achieve the “internationalization” of our campus

Increase the direct involvement of the President in SU’s financials

Continue Town/Gown efforts and initiatives

Work towards more effective communication among campus faculty, staff, and students
