Welcome and Opening Remarks – Dr. Janet Dudley-Eshbach, President o President Dudley-Eshbach welcomed team members to this meeting, and recognized Ed Cowell for his successful campaign for councilman on the Fruitland City Council. o President Dudley-Eshbach thanked everyone who participated in Family Weekend and Sea Gull Century. She also was very grateful for those who attended her 10th year anniversary celebration. While it was a very humbling event of recognition, much kudos go to the campus community for their strong support, hard work, and willingness to bring the Institution to where it is today and where it needs to go in the future. o The proposal for a structural adjustment to SU’s tuition rate is being revised to present PAT Meeting October 14, 2010 Page 2 to the Chancellor, and ultimately to the Board of Regents. It is anticipated that no action will be taken until after the November elections. o 2. 3. 4. Everyone is invited to participate in Homecoming events. Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez will be on campus to speak in honor of Constitution Day and Hispanic Heritage Month. Crime Mapping – Art Lembo o Dr. Lembo presented a PowerPoint presentation of new crime-mapping software that Salisbury Police Department officers will use to be able to map and analyze crimes right from their patrol cars. o Dr. Lembo, the technical director for the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC), received a $185,000 grant to develop three modules to identify locations, patterns, and trends of crime activities in the city. These modules include an Internet-based crime mapping system, an interactive crime analysis dashboard, and an in-field GIS application. This allows for “real time” data information to assist officers who are on patrol. o This collaboration between the University and the City of Salisbury exemplifies the success of linking educational resources to offer real solutions to problematic circumstances. Graduate Programs – Dr. Clifton Griffin o Dr. Griffin provided an overview of the progress of graduate program initiatives. o The Council of Graduate Schools reports that there is a national trend projecting that 2.5 million people will require a graduate degree, or in some cases a Ph.D, between the years of 2008 and 2018. o A Graduate Climate Working Group has been formed to review, evaluate, and make recommendations for operational improvements for graduate program administration at Salisbury University. o The first meeting of the University System of Maryland Graduate Deans was held on September 17, 2010. The discussion centered on common concerns and the development of strategies for advocacy. There are plans to establish an economic impact assessment of graduate education on the State of Maryland. TRIO Grant – Ed Cowell o Mr. Cowell updated the Team on the award of a Federal TRIO grant to Salisbury University, one of a select few institutions in the State of Maryland to be identified as first time recipients of this grant. The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and PAT Meeting October 14, 2010 Page 3 individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs. 5. University Governance o Faculty Senate – Dr. David Rieck i. The Faculty Senate passed a vote to restructure. The changes that were made dealt with inequities concerning representation of the smaller schools and library faculty members. ii. The Faculty Senate Academic Policies Committee is reviewing reporting procedures for claims of academic integrity, and the maximum credit limit a student can take during the winter semester. o Staff Senate – Jackie Eberts i. The Staff Senate formally received the guidelines for the Board of Regents Staff Awards and is encouraging everyone to consider nominating an exceptional staff member who they feel meets the criteria. o Student Government Association (SGA) – Morgan Feldman i. The SGA held a very successful Spirit Week in conjunction with Homecoming, including Gull Factor (a take on the TV show Fear Factor), Homecoming King and Queen pageant, and the Pep Rally, to name a few. ii. On Saturday, November 6 the SGA will hold “I Love Salisbury,” a program that lends student clean up support to helping area elementary schools and institutions like the Salisbury Zoo. 6. 2011 Committee Planning – Dane Foust o 7. During the fall of 2011, the campus will witness the opening of the Perdue School of Business and the Sea Gull Square residence hall, which offers 12-month housing. Considering the significant changes that year-round student living presents, and taking into consideration the many fall events that normally take place, it was felt a committee should be formed as a subset of the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Committee to consider all of the implications for the academic year beginning fall 2011. As a first step, a half-day workshop is scheduled in November, including individuals representing departments that will be impacted by these activities. Initiatives/Challenges as the Perdue Dean – Bob Wood o Dean Wood provided an update on his first months as the new Dean of the Perdue School of Business. One important initiative the School is pursuing is becoming more involved with the local community. Some of the events planned to achieve this are: i. Having speakers from local businesses and organizations come to campus. PAT Meeting October 14, 2010 Page 4 ii. The creation of Ethics Week. iii. Professional Development in April. iv. A student organization in Perdue School will be working with the Community Foundation on a service project. o The Accounting program in the Perdue School is considering AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International accreditation. There are only 173 accredited business programs in the world. The process takes approximately two to three years. o An ad hoc committee has been formed to review the current MBA program and to determine if a MBA Executive program is viable. o The new Perdue School building is due for completion in June 2011. The new building will enable more programs to take place, such as: i. Community nights with area accountants and tax specialists. ii. Small chamber groups. iii. Perdue Farms, Inc. annual meeting with be held on campus for the first time in August 2011. iv. The Atrium area will house informal information centers, and will highlight different businesses each month. 8. The next meeting of the President’s Advisory Team is scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 2010. President Dudley-Eshbach has suggested a tour of Sea Gull Square and the new Perdue building for either the upcoming November or December meetings. Recorder: Tracy Hajir
